Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful

الۤرٰ تِلْكَ اٰيٰتُ الْكِتٰبِ وَقُرْاٰنٍ مُّبِيْنٍ‏(1)

ALIF LAAAM RAA, TILKA AAYAATUL KETAABE WA QUR-AANIM MOBEEN.

Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the signs of the Book and a manifest Quran.

رُبَمَا يَوَدُّ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا لَوْ كَانُوْا مُسْلِمِيْنَ‏(2)

ROBAMAA YAWADDUL LAZEENA KAFAROO LAW KAANOO MUSLEMEEN.

Much will the faithless wish that they had been Muslims.

ذَرْهُمْ يَاْكُلُوْا وَيَتَمَتَّعُوْا وَيُلْهِهِمُ الْاَمَلُ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُوْنَ‏(3)

ZARHUM YAAKOLOO WA YATAMATTA-O’O WA YULHEHEMUL AMALO FASAWFA YA’LAMOON.

Leave them to eat and enjoy and to be diverted by longings. Soon they will know.

وَمَاۤ اَهْلَكْنَا مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ اِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَّعْلُوْمٌ‏(4)

WA MAA AHLAKNAA MIN QARYATIN ILLAA WA LAHAA KETAABUM MA’LOOM.

We did not destroy any town but that it had a known term.

مَا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ اُمَّةٍ اَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَاْخِرُوْنَ‏(5)

MAA TASBEQO MIN UMMATIN AJALAHAA WA MAA YASTAAKHEROON.

No nation can advance its time nor can it defer it.

وَ قَالُوْا يٰۤاَيُّهَا الَّذِىْ نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ الذِّكْرُ اِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُوْنٌؕ‏(6)

WA QAALOO YAA AYYOHAL LAZEE NUZZELA A’LAYHIZ ZIKRO INNAKA LA-MAJNOON.

They said, ‘O you, to whom the Reminder has been sent down, you are indeed crazy.

لَوْ مَا تَاْتِيْنَا بِالْمَلٰۤئِكَةِ اِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصّٰدِقِيْنَ‏(7)

LAW MAA TAATEENAA BIL-MALAAA-EKATE IN KUNTA MENAS SAADEQEEN.

Why do you not bring us the angels should you be truthful?!’

مَا نُنَزِّلُ الْمَلٰۤئِكَةَ اِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوْۤا اِذًا مُّنْظَرِيْنَ‏(8)

MAA NONAZZELUL MALAAA-EKATA ILLAA BIL-HAQQE WA MAA KAANOO EZAM MUNZAREEN.

We do not send down the angels except with due reason, and then they will not be granted any respite.

اِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَاِنَّا لَهٗ لَحٰفِظُوْنَ‏(9)

INNAA NAHNO NAZZALNAZ ZIKRA WA INNAA LAHU LA-HAAFEZOON.

Indeed We have sent down the Reminder, and indeed We will preserve it.

وَلَقَدْ اَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ فِىْ شِيَعِ الْاَوَّلِيْنَ‏(10)

WA LAQAD ARSALNAA MIN QABLEKA FEE SHEYA-I’L AWWALEEN.

Certainly We sent [apostles] before you to former communities,

وَمَا يَاْتِيْهِمْ مِّنْ رَّسُوْلٍ اِلَّا كَانُوْا بِهٖ يَسْتَهْزِءُوْنَ‏(11)

WA MAA YAATEEHIM MIR RASOOLIN ILLAA KAANOO BEHI YASTAHZE-OON.

and there did not come to them any apostle but that they used to deride him.

كَذٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهٗ فِىْ قُلُوْبِ الْمُجْرِمِيْنَۙ‏(12)

KAZAALEKA NASLOKOHU FEE QOLOOBIL MUJREMEEN.

That is how We let it pass through the hearts of the guilty:

لَا يُؤْمِنُوْنَ بِهٖۚ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ الْاَوَّلِيْنَ‏(13)

LAA YOAMENOONA BEH, WA QAD KHALAT SUNNATUL AWWALEEN.

they do not believe in it, and the precedent of the ancients has already passed.

وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ بَابًا مِّنَ السَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّوْا فِيْهِ يَعْرُجُوْنَۙ‏(14)

WA LAW FATAHNAA A’LAYHIM BAABAM MENAS SAMAAA-E FA-ZALLOO FEEHE YA’ROJOON.

Were We to open for them a gate of the sky, so that they could go on ascending through it,

لَقَالُوْۤا اِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ اَبْصَارُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَّسْحُوْرُوْنَ‏(15)

LAQAALOO INNAMAA SUKKERAT ABSAARONAA BAL NAHNO QAWMUM MASHOOROON.

they would surely say, ‘Indeed a spell has been cast on our eyes; indeed, we are a bewitched lot.’

وَلَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِى السَّمَآءِ بُرُوْجًا وَّزَيَّنّٰهَا لِلنّٰظِرِيْنَۙ‏(16)

WA LAQAD JA-A’LNAA FIS SAMAAA-E BOROOJANW WA ZAYYANNAAHAA LIN-NAAZEREEN.

Certainly We have appointed houses in the sky and adorned them for the onlookers,

وَحَفِظْنٰهَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطٰنٍ رَّجِيْمٍۙ‏(17)

WA HAFIZNAAHAA MIN KULLE SHAYTAANIR RAJEEM.

and We have guarded them from every outcast Satan,

اِلَّا مَنِ اسْتَرَقَ السَّمْعَ فَاَ تْبَعَهٗ شِهَابٌ مُّبِيْنٌ‏(18)

ILLAA MANIS TARAQAS SAM-A’ FA-ATBA-A’HU SHEHAABUM MOBEEN.

except someone who may eavesdrop, whereat there pursues him a manifest flame.

وَالْاَرْضَ مَدَدْنٰهَا وَاَلْقَيْنَا فِيْهَا رَوَاسِىَ وَاَنْۢبَتْنَا فِيْهَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ مَّوْزُوْنٍ‏(19)

WAL ARZA MADADNAAHAA WA ALQAYNAA FEEHAA RAWAASEYA WA AMBATNAA FEEHAA MIN KULLE SHAY-IM MAWZOON.

And We spread out the earth, and cast in it firm mountains, and We grew in it every kind of balanced thing,

وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيْهَا مَعَايِشَ وَمَنْ لَّسْتُمْ لَهٗ بِرٰزِقِيْنَ‏(20)

WA JA-A’LNAA LAKUM FEEHAA MA-A’AYESHA WA MAL LASTUM LAHU BE-RAAZEQEEN.

and made in it [various] means of livelihood for you and for those whom you do not provide for.

وَاِنْ مِّنْ شَىْءٍ اِلَّا عِنْدَنَا خَزَآئِنُهٗ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهٗۤ اِلَّا بِقَدَرٍ مَّعْلُوْمٍ‏(21)

WA IM MIN SHAY-IN ILLAA I’NDANAA KHAZAAA-ENOH, WA MAA NONAZZELOHU ILLAA BE-QADARIM MA’LOOM.

There is not a thing but that its sources are with Us, and We do not send it down except in a known measure.

وَاَرْسَلْنَا الرِّيٰحَ لَوَاقِحَ فَاَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَاَسْقَيْنٰكُمُوْهُۚ وَمَاۤ اَنْتُمْ لَهٗ بِخٰزِنِيْنَ‏(22)

WA ARSALNAR REYAAHA LAWAAQEHA FA-ANZALNAA MENAS SAMAAA-E MAAA-AN FA-ASQAYNAAKOMOOH, WA MAA ANTUM LAHU BE-KHAAZENEEN.

And We send the fertilizing winds and send down water from the sky providing it for you to drink and you are not maintainers of its resources.

وَ اِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْىٖ وَنُمِيْتُ وَنَحْنُ الْوٰرِثُوْنَ‏(23)

WA INNAA LANAHNO NOHYEE WA NOMEETO WA NAHNUL WAARESOON.

Indeed it is We who give life and bring death and We are the inheritors.

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَقْدِمِيْنَ مِنْكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَاْخِرِيْنَ‏(24)

WA LAQAD A’LIMNAL MUSTAQDEMEENA MINKUM WA LAQAD A’LIMNAL MUSTAAKHEREEN.

Certainly We know the predecessors among you and certainly We know the successors,

وَاِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْؕ اِنَّهٗ حَكِيْمٌ عَلِيْمٌ‏(25)

WA INNA RABBAKA HOWA YAHSHOROHUM, INNAHU HAKEEMUN A’LEEM.

and indeed it is your Lord who will resurrect them. Indeed, He is all-wise, all-knowing.

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَاٍ مَّسْنُوْنٍۚ‏(26)

WA LAQAD KHALAQNAL INSAANA MIN SALSAALIM MIN HAMA-EIM MASNOON.

Certainly We created man out of a dry clay [drawn] from an aging mud,

وَالْجَآنَّ خَلَقْنٰهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ مِنْ نَّارِ السَّمُوْمِ‏(27)

WAL JAANNA KHALAQNAAHO MIN QABLO MIN NAARIS SAMOOM.

and We created the jinn earlier, out of a piercing fire.

وَاِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلٰۤئِكَةِ اِنِّىْ خَالِقٌۢ بَشَرًا مِّنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَاٍ مَّسْنُوْنٍ‏(28)

WA IZ QAALA RABBOKA LIL-MALAAA-EKATE INNEE KHAALEQUM BASHARAM MIN SALSAALIM MIN HAMA-EIM MASNOON.

When your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed I am going to create a human out of a dry clay [drawn] from an aging mud.

فَاِذَا سَوَّيْتُهٗ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيْهِ مِنْ رُّوْحِىْ فَقَعُوْا لَهٗ سٰجِدِيْنَ‏(29)

FA-EZAA SAWWAYTOHU WA NAFAKHTO FEEHE MIR ROOHEE FA-QA-O’O LAHU SAAJEDEEN.

So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, then fall down in prostration before him.’

فَسَجَدَ الْمَلٰۤئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ اَجْمَعُوْنَۙ‏(30)

FA-SAJADAL MALAAA-EKATO KULLOHUM AJMA-O’ON.

Thereat the angels prostrated, all of them together,

اِلَّاۤ اِبْلِيْسَؕ اَبٰٓى اَنْ يَّكُوْنَ مَعَ السّٰجِدِيْنَ‏(31)

ILLAA IBLEES, ABAA AN-Y YAKOONA MA-A’S SAAJEDEEN.

but not Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated.

قَالَ يٰۤاِبْلِيْسُ مَا لَكَ اَلَّا تَكُوْنَ مَعَ السّٰجِدِيْنَ‏(32)

QAALA YAA IBLEESO MAA LAKA ALLAA TAKOONA MA-A’S SAAJEDEEN.

He said, ‘O Iblis! What kept you from being among those who have prostrated?’

قَالَ لَمْ اَكُنْ لِّاَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهٗ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَاٍ مَّسْنُوْنٍ‏(33)

QAALA LAM AKUL LE-ASJODA LE-BASHARIN KHALAQTAHU MIN SALSAALIM MIN HAMA-EIM MASNOON.

Said he, ‘I will not prostrate before a human whom You have created out of a dry clay [drawn] from an aging mud.’

قَالَ فَاخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَاِنَّكَ رَجِيْمٌۙ‏(34)

QAALA FAKHRUJ MINHAA FA-INNAKA RAJEEM.

He said, ‘Begone hence, for you are indeed an outcast,

وَّاِنَّ عَلَيْكَ اللَّعْنَةَ اِلٰى يَوْمِ الدِّيْنِ‏(35)

WA INNA A’LAYKAL LA’NATA ELAA YAWMID DEEN.

and indeed the curse shall lie on you until the Day of Retribution.’

قَالَ رَبِّ فَاَنْظِرْنِىْۤ اِلٰى يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُوْنَ‏(36)

QAALA RABBE FA-ANZIRNEE ELAA YAWME YUB-A’SOON.

He said, ‘My Lord! Respite me till the day they will be resurrected.’

قَالَ فَاِنَّكَ مِنَ الْمُنْظَرِيْنَۙ‏(37)

QAALA FA-INNAKA MENAL MUNZAREEN.

Said He, ‘You are indeed among the reprieved

اِلٰى يَوْمِ الْوَقْتِ الْمَعْلُوْمِ‏(38)

ELAA YAWMIL WAQTIL MA’LOOM.

until the day of the known time.’

قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَاۤ اَغْوَيْتَنِىْ لَاُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِى الْاَرْضِ وَلَاُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ اَجْمَعِيْنَۙ‏(39)

QAALA RABBE BEMAA AGHWAYTANEE LA-OZAYYENANNA LAHUM FIL ARZE WA LA-UGHWEYANNAHUM AJMA-E’EN.

He said, ‘My Lord! As You have consigned me to perversity, I will surely glamorize [evil] for them on the earth, and I will surely pervert them, all

اِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ الْمُخْلَصِيْنَ‏(40)

ILLAA E’BAADAKA MINHOMUL MUKHLASEEN.

except Your dedicated servants among them.’

قَالَ هٰذَا صِرَاطٌ عَلَىَّ مُسْتَقِيْمٌ‏(41)

QAALA HAAZAA SERAATUN A’LAYYA MUSTAQEEM.

He said, ‘This is the path [leading] straight to Me.

اِنَّ عِبَادِىْ لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطٰنٌ اِلَّا مَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْغٰوِيْنَ‏(42)

INNA E’BAADEE LAYSA LAKA A’LAYHIM SULTAANUN ILLAA MANIT TABA-A’KA MENAL GHAAWEEN.

Indeed, as for My servants you do not have any authority over them, except the perverse who follow you,

وَاِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ اَجْمَعِيْنَۙ‏(43)

WA INNA JAHANNAMA LA-MAW-E’DOHUM AJMA-E’EN.

and indeed hell is the tryst of them all.

لَهَا سَبْعَةُ اَبْوَابٍؕ لِكُلِّ بَابٍ مِّنْهُمْ جُزْءٌ مَّقْسُوْمٌ‏(44)

LAHAA SAB-A’TO ABWAAB, LE-KULLE BAABIM MINHUM JUZ-UM MAQSOOM.

It has seven gates, and to each gate belongs a separate portion of them.’

اِنَّ الْمُتَّقِيْنَ فِىْ جَنّٰتٍ وَّعُيُوْنٍؕ‏(45)

INNAL MUTTAQEENA FEE JANNAATINW WA O’YOON.

Indeed the Godwary will be amid gardens and springs.

اُدْخُلُوْهَا بِسَلٰمٍ اٰمِنِيْنَ‏(46)

UDKHOLOOHAA BE-SALAAMIN AAMENEEN.

‘‘Enter it in peace and safety!’’

وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِىْ صُدُوْرِهِمْ مِّنْ غِلٍّ اِخْوَانًا عَلٰى سُرُرٍ مُّتَقٰبِلِيْنَ‏(47)

WA NAZA’NAA MAA FEE SODOOREHIM MIN GHILLIN IKHWAANAN A’LAA SORORIM MOTAQAABELEEN.

We will remove whatever rancour there is in their breasts; [intimate like] brothers, [they will be reclining] on couches, facing one another.

لَا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيْهَا نَصَبٌ وَّمَا هُمْ مِّنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِيْنَ‏(48)

LAA YAMASSOHUM FEEHAA NASABUNW WA MAA HUM MINHAA BE-MUKHRAJEEN.

Therein neither weariness shall touch them, nor will they [ever] be expelled from it.

نَبِّئْ عِبَادِىْۤ اَنِّىْۤ اَنَا الْغَفُوْرُ الرَّحِيْمُۙ‏(49)

NABBEA E’BAADEE ANNEE ANAL GHAFOORUR RAHEEM.

Inform my servants that I am indeed the All-forgiving, the All-merciful,

وَاَنَّ عَذَابِىْ هُوَ الْعَذَابُ الْاَلِيْمُ‏(50)

WA ANNA A’ZAABEE HOWAL A’ZAABUL ALEEM.

and that My punishment is a painful punishment.

وَنَبِّئْهُمْ عَنْ ضَيْفِ اِبْرٰهِيْمَۘ‏(51)

WA NABBEAHUM A’N ZAYFE IBRAAHEEM.

And inform them about the guests of Abraham,

اِذْ دَخَلُوْا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوْا سَلٰمًاؕ قَالَ اِنَّا مِنْكُمْ وَجِلُوْنَ‏(52)

IZ DAKHALOO A’LAYHE FA-QAALOO SALAAMAA, QAALA INNAA MINKUM WAJELOON.

when they entered into his presence and said, ‘Peace!’ He said, ‘We are indeed afraid of you.’

قَالُوْا لَا تَوْجَلْ اِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلٰمٍ عَلِيْمٍ‏(53)

QAALOO LAA TAWJAL INNAA NOBASH-SHEROKA BE-GHOLAAMIN A’LEEM.

They said, ‘Do not be afraid. Indeed we give you the good news of a wise son.’

قَالَ اَبَشَّرْتُمُوْنِىْ عَلٰٓى اَنْ مَّسَّنِىَ الْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُوْنَ‏(54)

QAALA ABASH-SHARTOMOONEE A’LAA AM MASSANEYAL KEBARO FABEMA TOBASH-SHEROON.

He said, ‘Do you give me good news though old age has befallen me? What is the good news that you bring me?’

قَالُوْا بَشَّرْنٰكَ بِالْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُنْ مِّنَ الْقٰنِطِيْنَ‏(55)

QAALOO BASH-SHARNAAKA BIL-HAQQE FALAA TAKUM MENAL QAANETEEN.

They said, ‘We bring you good news in truth; so do not be despondent.’

قَالَ وَمَنْ يَّقْنَطُ مِنْ رَّحْمَةِ رَبِّهٖۤ اِلَّا الضَّآلُّوْنَ‏(56)

QAALA WA MAN-Y YAQNATO MIR RAHMATE RABBEHI ILLAZ ZAALLOON.

He said, ‘Who despairs of his Lord’s mercy except the astray?!’

قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ اَيُّهَا الْمُرْسَلُوْنَ‏(57)

QAALA FAMAA KHATBOKUM AYYOHAL MURSALOON.

He said, ‘O messengers, what is now your errand?’

قَالُوْۤا اِنَّاۤ اُرْسِلْنَاۤ اِلٰى قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِيْنَۙ‏(58)

QAALOO INNAA URSILNAA ELAA QAWMIM MUJREMEEN.

They said, ‘We have been sent toward a guilty people,

اِلَّاۤ اٰلَ لُوْطٍؕ اِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوْهُمْ اَجْمَعِيْنَۙ‏(59)

ILLAA AALA LOOT, INNAA LA-MONAJJOOHUM AJMA-E’EN.

[who shall perish] except the family of Lot. We will indeed deliver all of them,

اِلَّا امْرَاَتَهٗ قَدَّرْنَاۤ ۙ اِنَّهَا لَمِنَ الْغٰبِرِيْنَ‏(60)

ILLAM RA-ATAHU QADDARNAA, INNAHAA LAMENAL GHAABEREEN.

except his wife, [who], We have ordained, will indeed be among those who remain behind.’

فَلَمَّا جَآءَ اٰلَ لُوْطِ ۨالْمُرْسَلُوْنَۙ‏(61)

FALAMMAA JAAA-A AALA LOOTENIL MURSALOON.

So when the messengers came to Lot’s family,

قَالَ اِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُّنْكَرُوْنَ‏(62)

QAALA INNAKUM QAWMUM MUNKAROON.

he said, ‘You are indeed strangers [to me].’

قَالُوْا بَلْ جِئْنٰكَ بِمَا كَانُوْا فِيْهِ يَمْتَرُوْنَ‏(63)

QAALOO BAL JEANAAKA BEMAA KAANOO FEEHE YAMTAROON.

They said, ‘Indeed, we bring you what they used to doubt.

وَ اَتَيْنٰكَ بِالْحَقِّ وَاِنَّا لَصٰدِقُوْنَ‏(64)

WA ATAYNAAKA BIL-HAQQE WA INNAA LA-SAADEQOON.

We bring you the truth, and indeed, we speak truly.

فَاَسْرِ بِاَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِّنَ الَّيْلِ وَاتَّبِعْ اَدْبَارَهُمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنْكُمْ اَحَدٌ وَّامْضُوْا حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُوْنَ‏(65)

FA-ASRE BE-AHLEKA BE-QIT-I’M MENAL LAYLE WAT TABE’ ADBAARAHUM WA LAA YALTAFIT MINKUM AHADUNW WAM ZOO HAYSO TOAMAROON.

Take your family in a watch of the night; and follow in their rear, and none of you should turn round, and proceed as you are bidden.’

وَقَضَيْنَاۤ اِلَيْهِ ذٰ لِكَ الْاَمْرَ اَنَّ دَابِرَ هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ مَقْطُوْعٌ مُّصْبِحِيْنَ‏(66)

WA QAZAYNAA ELAYHE ZAALEKAL AMRA ANNA DAABERA HAA-OLAAA-E MAQTOO-U’M MUSBEHEEN.

We apprised him of the matter that these will be rooted out by dawn.

وَجَآءَ اَهْلُ الْمَدِيْنَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُوْنَ‏(67)

WA JAAA-A AHLUL MADEENATE YASTABSHEROON.

The people of the city came, rejoicing.

قَالَ اِنَّ هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ ضَيْفِىْ فَلَا تَفْضَحُوْنِۙ‏(68)

QAALA INNA HAA-OLAAA-E ZAYFEE FALAA TAFZAHOON.

He said, ‘These are indeed my guests. Do not bring dishonour on me.

وَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ وَلَا تُخْزُوْنِ‏(69)

WAT TAQUL LAAHA WA LAA TUKHZOON.

Be wary of Allah and do not humiliate me.’

قَالُوْۤا اَوَلَمْ نَنْهَكَ عَنِ الْعٰلَمِيْنَ‏(70)

QAALOO AWA LAM NANHAKA A’NIL A’ALAMEEN.

They said, ‘Did we not forbid you from [defending ] strangers?’

قَالَ هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ بَنٰتِىْۤ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ فٰعِلِيْنَؕ‏(71)

QAALA HAA-OLAAA-E BANAATEE IN KUNTUM FAA-E’LEEN.

He said, ‘These are my daughters, [marry them] if you should do anything.’

لَعَمْرُكَ اِنَّهُمْ لَفِىْ سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُوْنَ‏(72)

LA-A’MROKA INNAHUM LAFEE SAKRATEHIM YA’MAHOON.

By your life, they were bewildered in their drunkenness.

فَاَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِيْنَۙ‏(73)

FA-AKHAZATHOMUS SAYHATO MUSHREQEEN.

So the Cry seized them at sunrise,

فَجَعَلْنَا عَالِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَ اَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّنْ سِجِّيْلٍؕ‏(74)

FA-JA-A’LNAA A’ALEYAHAA SAAFELAHAA WA AMTARNAA A’LAYHIM HEJAARATAM MIN SIJJEEL.

and We made its topmost part its nethermost, and rained on them stones of shale.

اِنَّ فِىْ ذٰ لِكَ لَاٰيٰتٍ لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِيْنَ‏(75)

INNA FEE ZAALEKA LA-AAYAATIL LIL-MOTAWASSEMEEN.

There are indeed signs in that for the percipient.

وَاِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيْلٍ مُّقِيْمٍ‏(76)

WA INNAHAA LABE-SABEELIM MOQEEM.

Indeed it is on a standing road,

اِنَّ فِىْ ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَةً لِّلْمُؤْمِنِيْنَؕ‏(77)

INNA FEE ZAALEKA LA-AAYATAL LIL-MOAMENEEN.

and there is indeed a sign in that for the faithful.

وَاِنْ كَانَ اَصْحٰبُ الْاَيْكَةِ لَظٰلِمِيْنَۙ‏(78)

WA IN KAANA ASHAABUL AYKATE LA-ZAALEMEEN.

Indeed the inhabitants of Aykah were [also] wrongdoers.

فَانتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْۘ وَاِنَّهُمَا لَبِاِمَامٍ مُّبِيْنٍؕ‏(79)

FANTAQAMNAA MINHUM, WA INNAHOMAA LABE-EMAAMIM MOBEEN.

So We took vengeance on them, and indeed the two of them are on an open highway.

وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ اَصْحٰبُ الْحِجْرِ الْمُرْسَلِيْنَۙ‏(80)

WA LAQAD KAZZABA ASHAABUL HIJRIL MURSALEEN.

Certainly the inhabitants of Hijr denied the apostles.

وَاٰتَيْنٰهُمْ اٰيٰتِنَا فَكَانُوْا عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِيْنَۙ‏(81)

WA AATAYNAAHUM AAYAATENAA FA-KAANOO A’NHAA MO’REZEEN.

We had given them Our signs but they disregarded them.

وَكَانُوْا يَنْحِتُوْنَ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ بُيُوْتًا اٰمِنِيْنَ‏(82)

WA KAANOO YANHETOONA MENAL JEBAALE BOYOOTAN AAMENEEN.

They used to hew out dwellings from mountains feeling secure.

فَاَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِيْنَۙ‏(83)

FA-AKHAZATHOMUS SAYHATO MUSBEHEEN.

So the Cry seized them at dawn,

فَمَاۤ اَغْنٰى عَنْهُمْ مَّا كَانُوْا يَكْسِبُوْنَؕ‏(84)

FAMAA AGHNAA A’NHUM MAA KAANOO YAKSEBOON.

and what they used to earn did not avail them.

وَمَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَاۤ اِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ ؕ وَاِنَّ السَّاعَةَ لَاٰتِيَةٌ فَاصْفَحِ الصَّفْحَ الْجَمِيْلَ‏(85)

WA MAA KHALAQNAS SAMAAWAATE WAL ARZA WA MAA BAYNAHOMAA ILLAA BIL-HAQ, WA INNAS SAA-A’TA LA-AATEYATUN FASFAHIS SAFHAL JAMEEL.

We did not create the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them except with consummate wisdom, and indeed the Hour is bound to come. So forbear with a graceful forbearance.

اِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ الْخَلّٰقُ الْعَلِيْمُ‏(86)

INNA RABBAKA HOWAL KHALLAAQUL A’LEEM.

Indeed your Lord is the All-creator, the All-knowing.

وَلَقَدْ اٰتَيْنٰكَ سَبْعًا مِّنَ الْمَثَانِىْ وَالْقُرْاٰنَ الْعَظِيْمَ‏(87)

WA LAQAD AATAYNAAKA SAB-A’M MENAL MASAANEE WAL QUR-AANAL A’ZEEM.

Certainly We have given you [the surah of] the seven oft-repeated verses and the great Quran.

لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ اِلٰى مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهٖۤ اَزْوَاجًا مِّنْهُمْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ‏(88)

LAA TAMUDDANNA A’YNAYKA ELAA MAA MATTA’NAA BEHI AZWAAJAM MINHUM WA LAA TAHZAN A’LAYHIM WAKH FIZ JANAAHAKA LIL-MOAMENEEN.

Do not extend your glance toward what We have provided to certain groups of them, and do not grieve for them, and lower your wing to the faithful,

وَقُلْ اِنِّىْۤ اَنَا النَّذِيْرُ الْمُبِيْنُۚ‏(89)

WA QUL INNEE ANAN NAZEERUL MOBEEN.

and say, ‘I am indeed a manifest warner [of punishment from God],’

كَمَاۤ اَنْزَلْنَا عَلَى الْمُقْتَسِمِيْنَۙ‏(90)

KAMAA ANZALNAA A’LAL MUQTASEMEEN.

like that We sent down upon those who split into bands,

الَّذِيْنَ جَعَلُوا الْقُرْاٰنَ عِضِيْنَ‏(91)

LAZEENA JA-A’LUL QUR-AANA E’ZEEN.

who represented the Quran as magic.

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْئَلَنَّهُمْ اَجْمَعِيْنَۙ‏(92)

FAWA RABBEKA LANAS-ALANNAHUM AJMA-E’EN.

By your Lord, We will question them all

عَمَّا كَانُوْا يَعْمَلُوْنَ‏(93)

A’MMAA KAANOO YA’MALOON.

concerning what they used to do.

فَاصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ وَ اَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْمُشْرِكِيْنَ‏(94)

FASDA’ BEMAA TOAMARO WA A-A’RIZ A’NIL MUSHREKEEN.

So proclaim what you have been commanded, and turn away from the polytheists.

اِنَّا كَفَيْنٰكَ الْمُسْتَهْزِءِيْنَۙ‏(95)

INNAA KAFAYNAAKAL MUSTAHZE-EEN.

Indeed We will suffice you against the deriders

الَّذِيْنَ يَجْعَلُوْنَ مَعَ اللّٰهِ اِلٰهًا اٰخَرَۚ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُوْنَ‏(96)

LAZEENA YAJ-A’LOONA MA-A’L LAAHE ELAAHAN AAKHAR, FASAWFA YA’LAMOON.

—those who set up another deity besides Allah. Soon they will know!

وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ اَنَّكَ يَضِيْقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُوْلُوْنَۙ‏(97)

WA LAQAD NA’LAMO ANNAKA YAZEEQO SADROKA BEMAA YAQOOLOON.

Certainly We know that you become upset because of what they say.

فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُنْ مِّنَ السّٰجِدِيْنَۙ‏(98)

FA-SABBEH BE-HAMDE RABBEKA WA KUM MENAS SAAJEDEEN.

So celebrate the praise of your Lord and be among those who prostrate,

وَاعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتّٰى يَاْتِيَكَ الْيَقِيْنُ‏(99)

WA’BUD RABBAKA HATTAA YAATEYAKAL YAQEEN.

and worship your Lord until certainty comes to you.
