Surah al-Shoaraa (The Poets)

This Surah was revealed in Makkah and it has a total of 227 verses. In the commentary of Burhan it is narrated from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) that whoever recites the three Tawaseen (i.e. the three Surahs beginning with Taa-Seen) on every Thursday night, will be counted from the friends of Allah and will be under the protection of Allah (s.w.t.). The reward for reciting this Surah is so great that when the person sees the reward he has gotten from it (on the Day of Judgement) he will be pleased.

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said that the one who recites this Surah will come out of his grave reciting the Shahadah or Kalimah, bearing witness in the Oneness of Allah (s.w.t.). Reciting Surah al-Shoaraa at dawn is compared to the recitation of all the heavenly books that have been revealed. Frequent recitation of this Surah ensures protection from thieves and from death by drowning or being burnt. Drinking water in which this Surah was dissolved protects one from all types of ailments.

WA MAA AS-ALOKUM A’LAYHE MIN AJR, IN AJREYA ILLAA A’LAA RABBIL A’ALAMEEN.

I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward lies only with the Lord of all the worlds.

AWFUL KAYLA WA LAA TAKOONOO MENAL MUKHSEREEN.

Observe the full measure, and do not be of those who give short measure.

WA ZENOO BIL-QISTAASIL MUSTAQEEM.

Weigh with an even balance,

WA LAA TABKHASUN NAASA ASHYAAA-AHUM WA LAA TA’SAW FIL ARZE MUFSEDEEN.

and do not cheat the people of their goods. Do not act wickedly on the earth, causing corruption.

WAT TAQUL LAZEE KHALAQAKUM WAL JEBILLATAL AWWALEEN.

Be wary of Him who created you and the earlier generations.’

QAALOO INNAMAA ANTA MENAL MOSAHHAREEN.

They said, ‘Indeed you are one of the bewitched.

WA MAA ANTA ILLAA BASHARUM MISLONAA WA IN NAZUNNOKA LAMENAL KAAZEBEEN.

You are just a human being like us, and we indeed consider you to be a liar.

FA-ASQIT A’LAYNAA KESAFAM MENAS SAMAAA-E IN KUNTA MENAS SAADEQEEN.

Make a fragment of the sky falls upon us, should you be truthful.’

QAALA RABBEE A-A’LAMO BEMAA TA’MALOON.

He said, ‘My Lord knows best what you are doing.’

FA-KAZZABOOHO FA-AKHAZAHUM A’ZAABO YAWMIZ ZULLAH, INNAHU KAANA A’ZAABA YAWMIN A’ZEEM.

So they impugned him, and then they were overtaken by the punishment of the day of the overshadowing cloud. It was indeed the punishment of a terrible day.

INNA FEE ZAALEKA LA-AAYAH, WA MAA KAANA AKSAROHUM MOAMENEEN.

There is indeed a sign in that; but most of them do not have faith.

WA INNA RABBAKA LAHOWAL A’ZEEZUR RAHEEM.

Indeed your Lord is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.

WA INNAHU LA-TANZEELO RABBIL A’ALAMEEN.

This is indeed [a Book] sent down by the Lord of all the worlds,

NAZALA BEHIR ROOHUL AMEEN.

brought down by the Trustworthy Spirit

A’LAA QALBEKA LE-TAKOONA MENAL MUNZEREEN.

upon your heart (so that you may be one of the warners),

BE-LESAANIN A’RABIYYIM MOBEEN.

in a clear Arabic language.

WA INNAHU LAFEE ZOBORIL AWWALEEN.

It is indeed [foretold] in the scriptures of the ancients.

AWA LAM YAKUL LAHUM AAYATAN AN-Y YA’LAMAHU O’LAMAAA-O BANEE ISRAAA-EEL.

Is it not a sign for them that the learned of the Children of Israel recognize it?

WA LAW NAZZALNAAHO A’LAA BA’ZIL A-A’JAMEEN.

Had We sent it down upon some non-Arab

FA-QARA-AHU A’LAYHIM MAA KAANOO BEHI MOAMENEEN.

and had he recited it to them, they would not have believed in it.

KAZAALEKA SALAKNAAHO FEE QOLOOBIL MUJREMEEN.

This is how We let it pass through the hearts of the guilty:

LAA YOAMENOONA BEHI HATTAA YARAWUL A’ZAABAL ALEEM.

they do not believe in it until they sight the painful punishment.

FA-YAATEYAHUM BAGHTATANW WA HUM LAA YASH-O’ROON.

It will overtake them suddenly while they are unaware.

FA-YAQOOLOO HAL NAHNO MUNZAROON.

Thereupon they will say, ‘Shall we be granted any respite?’

AFABE-A’ZAABENAA YASTA’JELOON.

So do they seek to hasten on Our punishment?

AFA-RA-AYTA IM MATTA’NAAHUM SENEEN.

Tell me, should We let them enjoy for some years,

SUMMA JAAA-AHUM MAA KAANOO YOO-A’DOON.

then there comes to them what they have been promised,

MAA AGHNAA A’NHUM MAA KAANOO YOMATTA-O’ON.

of what avail to them will be that which they were given to enjoy?

WA MAA AHLAKNAA MIN QARYATIN ILLAA LAHAA MUNZEROON.

We have not destroyed any town without its having warners,

ZIKRAA, WA MAA KUNNAA ZAALEMEEN.

for the sake of admonition, and We were not unjust.

WA MAA TANAZZALAT BEHISH SHAYAATEEN.

It has not been brought down by the devils.

WA MAA YAMBAGHEE LAHUM WA MAA YASTATEE-O’ON.

Neither does it behoove them, nor are they capable [of doing that].

INNAHUM A’NIS SAM-E’ LA-MA’ZOOLOON.

Indeed, they are kept at bay [even] from hearing it.

FALAA TAD-O’ MA-A’L LAAHE ELAAHAN AAKHARA FA-TAKOONA MENAL MO-A’ZZABEEN.

So do not invoke any god besides Allah, lest you should be among the punished.

WA ANZIR A’SHEERATAKAL AQRABEEN.

Warn the nearest of your kinsfolk,

WAKH FIZ JANAAHAKA LEMANIT TABA-A’KA MENAL MOAMENEEN.

and lower your wing to the faithful who follow you.

FA-IN A’SAWKA FA-QUL INNEE BAREE-UM MIMMAA TA’MALOON.

But if they disobey you, say, ‘I am absolved of what you do.’

WA TAWAKKAL A’LAL A’ZEEZIR RAHEEM.

And put your trust in the All-mighty, the All-merciful,

LAZEE YARAAKA HEENA TAQOOM.

who sees you when you stand [for prayer],

WA TAQALLOBAKA FIS SAAJEDEEN.

and your going about among those who prostrate.

INNAHU HOWAS SAMEE-U’L A’LEEM.

Indeed He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.

HAL ONABBE-OKUM A’LAA MAN TANAZZALUSH SHAYAATEEN.

Should I inform you on whom the devils descend?

TANAZZALO A’LAA KULLE AFFAAKIN ASEEM.

They descend on every sinful liar.

YULQOONAS SAM-A’ WA AKSAROHUM KAAZEBOON.

They eavesdrop, and most of them are liars.

WASH SHO-A’RAAA-O YATTABE-O’HOMUL GHAAWOON.

As for the poets, [only] the perverse follow them.

ALAM TARA ANNAHUM FEE KULLE WAADIN-Y YAHEEMOON.

Have you not regarded that they rove in every valley,

WA ANNAHUM YAQOOLOONA MAA LAA YAF-A’LOON.

and that they say what they do not do?

ILLAL LAZEENA AAMANOO WA A’MELUS SAALEHAATE WA ZAKARUL LAAHA KASEERANW WAN TASAROO MIM BA’DE MAA ZOLEMOO, WA SAYA’LAMUL LAZEENA ZALAMOO AYYA MUNQALABIN-Y YANQALEBOON.

Barring those who have faith, do righteous deeds, and remember Allah much often, and vindicate themselves after they have been wronged. And the wrongdoers will soon know at what goal they will end up.
