Surah al-Haaqqah (The Sure Calamity)

This Surah was revealed in Makkah and it has 52 verses. Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) has advised that this Surah should be recited often in prayers as this is a sign of faith. This Surah has praise for Imam Ali (a.s.) and insult for Mu’awiya ibn Aba Sufyan.

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) has said that reciting this Surah makes the accounting of deeds on the Day of Reckoning easier. If this Surah is worn as a talisman by a pregnant woman, then her baby will be safe. Giving water in which this Surah has been dissolved to a child will make his memory and intellect improve. Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.) said that the one who recites this Surah will never lose his religion.

What will show you what is the Besieger?!

KAZZABAT SAMOODO WA A’ADUM BIL-QAARE-A’H.

Thamudand ‘Ad denied the Cataclysm.

WA AMMAA A’ADUN FA-OHLEKOO BE-REEHIN SARSARIN A’ATEYAH.

And as for ‘Ad, they were destroyed by a fierce icy gale,

FAHAL TARAA LAHUM MIM BAAQEYAH.

So do you see any remaining trace of them?

WA JAAA-A FIR-A’WNO WA MAN QABLAHU WAL MOATAFEKAATO BIL-KHAATE-AH.

Then Pharaoh and those who were before him, and the towns that were overturned, brought about iniquity.

FA-A’SAW RASOOLA RABBEHIM FA-AKHAZAHUM AKHZATAR RAABEYAH.

They disobeyed the apostle of their Lord, so He seized them with a terrible seizing.

INNAA LAMMAA TAGHAL MAAA-O HAMALNAAKUM FIL JAAREYAH.

Indeed when the Flood rose high, We carried you in a floating ark,

LE-NAJ-A’LAHAA LAKUM TAZKERATANW WA TA-E’YAHAA OZONUNW WAA-E’YAH.

WA HOMELATIL ARZO WAL JEBAALO FA-DUKKATAA DAKKATANW WAAHEDAH.

and the earth and the mountains are lifted and levelled with a single levelling,

FAYAWMA-EZINW WAQA-A’TIL WAAQE-A’H.

then, on that day, will the Imminent [Hour] befall

WAL MALAKO A’LAA ARJAAA-EHAA, WA YAHMELO A’RSHA RABBEKA FAWQAHUM YAWMA-EZIN SAMAANEYAH.

with the angels all over it, and the Throne of your Lord will be borne that day by eight [angels].

YAWMA-EZIN TO’RAZOONA LAA TAKHFAA MINKUM KHAAFEYAH.

That day you will be presented [before your Lord]: none of your secrets will remain hidden.

FA-AMMAA MAN OOTEYA KETAABAHU BE-YAMEENEHI, FA-YAQOOLO HAAA-OMUQ RA-OO KETAABEYAH.

As for him who is given his book in his right hand, he will say, ‘Here, take and read my book!

INNEE ZANANTO ANNEE MOLAAQIN HESAABEYAH.

Indeed I knew that I will encounter my account [of deeds].’

So he will have a pleasant life,

in an elevated garden,

whose clusters [of fruits] will be within easy reach.

KOLOO WASH RABOO HANEE-AM BEMAA ASLAFTUM FIL AYYAAMIL KHAALEYAH.

[He will be told]: ‘Enjoy your food and drink, for what you had sent in advance in past days [for your future life].’

WA AMMAA MAN OOTEYA KETAABAHU BE-SHEMAALEHI, FA-YAQOOLO YAA LAYTANEE LAM OOTA KETAABEYAH.

But as for him who is given his book in his left hand, he will say, ‘I wish I had not been given my book,

WA LAM ADRE MAA HESAABEYAH.

nor had I ever known what my account is!

MAA AGHNAA A’NNEE MAALEYAH.

My wealth did not avail me.

HALAKA A’NNEE SULTAANEYAH.

My authority has left me.’

KHOZOOHO FA-GHULLOOH.

[The angels will be told:] ‘Seize him, and fetter him!

SUMMAL JAHEEMA SALLOOH.

Then put him into hell.

SUMMA FEE SILSELATIN ZAR-O’HAA SAB-O’ONA ZERAA-A’N FASLOKOOH.

Then bind him in a chain, seventy cubits in length.

INNAHU KAANA LAA YOAMENO BIL-LAAHIL A’ZEEM.

Indeed he had no faith in Allah, the All-supreme,

WA LAA YAHUZZO A’LAA TA-A’AMIL MISKEEN.

and he did not urge the feeding of the needy,

FA-LAYSA LAHUL YAWMA HAAHONAA HAMEEM.

so he has no friend here today,

WA LAA TA-A’AMUN ILLAA MIN GHISLEEN.

nor any food except pus,

LAA YAAKOLOHU ILLAL KHAATE-OON.

which no one shall eat except the iniquitous.’

FALAA UQSEMO BEMAA TUBSEROON.

I swear by what you see

WA MAA LAA TUBSEROON.

and what you do not see:

INNAHU LA-QAWLO RASOOLIN KAREEM.

it is indeed the speech of a noble apostle

WA MAA HOWA BE-QAWLE SHAA-E’R, QALEELAM MAA TOAMENOON.

and it is not the speech of a poet. Little is the faith that you have!

WA LAA BE-QAWLE KAAHEN, QALEELAM MAA TAZAKKAROON.

Nor is it the speech of a soothsayer. Little is the admonition that you take!

TANZEELUM MIR RABBIL A’ALAMEEN.

Gradually sent down from the Lord of all the worlds.

WA LAW TAQAWWALA A’LAYNAA BA’ZAL AQAAWEEL.

Had he faked any sayings in Our name,

LA-AKHAZNAA MINHO BIL-YAMEEN.

We would have surely seized him by the right hand

SUMMA LAQATA’NAA MINHUL WATEEN.

and then cut off his aorta,

FAMAA MINKUM MIN AHADIN A’NHO HAAJEZEEN.

and none of you could have held Us off from him.

WA INNAHU LA-TAZKERATUL LIL-MUTTAQEEN.

Indeed it is a reminder for the Godwary.

WA INNAA LANA’LAMO ANNA MINKUM MOKAZZEBEEN.

Indeed We know that there are some among you who deny [it].

WA INNAHU LA-HASRATUN A’LAL KAAFEREEN.

And indeed it will be a [matter of] regret for the faithless.

WA INNAHU LA-HAQQUL YAQEEN.

It is indeed certain truth.

FA-SABBEH BISME RABBEKAL A’ZEEM.

So celebrate the Name of your Lord, the All-supreme.
