71: Nuh نوح

Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful

اِنَّاۤ اَرْسَلْنَا نُوْحًا اِلٰى قَوْمِهٖۤ اَنْ اَنْذِرْ قَوْمَكَ مِنْ قَبْلِ اَنْ يَّاْتِيَهُمْ عَذَابٌ اَلِيْمٌ‏(1)

INNAA ARSALNAA NOOHAN ELAA QAWMEHI AN ANZIR QAWMAKA MIN QABLE AN-Y YAATEYAHUM A’ZAABUN ALEEM.

Indeed We sent Noah to his people, [saying,] ‘Warn your people before a painful punishment overtakes them.’

قَالَ يٰقَوْمِ اِنِّىْ لَكُمْ نَذِيْرٌ مُّبِيْنٌۙ‏(2)

QAALA YAA QAWME INNEE LAKUM NAZEERUM MOBEEN.

He said, ‘O my people! Indeed, I am a manifest warner to you.

اَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللّٰهَ وَاتَّقُوْهُ وَاَطِيْعُوْنِۙ‏(3)

ANE’BODUL LAAHA WAT TAQOOHO WA ATEE-O’ON.

Worship Allah and be wary of Him, and obey me,

يَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ مِّنْ ذُنُوْبِكُمْ وَيُؤَخِّرْكُمْ اِلٰٓى اَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّىؕ اِنَّ اَجَلَ اللّٰهِ اِذَا جَآءَ لَا يُؤَخَّرُۘ لَوْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُوْنَ‏(4)

YAGHFIR LAKUM MIN ZONOOBEKUM WA YO-AKH-KHIRKUM ELAA AJALIM MOSAMMAA, INNA AJALAL LAAHE EZAA JAAA-A LAA YO-AKH-KHAR, LAW KUNTUM TA’LAMOON.

that He may forgive you some of your sins and respite you until a specified time. Indeed when Allah’s [appointed] time comes, it cannot be deferred, if you know.’

قَالَ رَبِّ اِنِّىْ دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِىْ لَيْلًا وَّنَهَارًا ۙ‏(5)

QAALA RABBE INNEE DA-A’WTO QAWMEE LAYLANW WA NAHAARAA.

He said, ‘My Lord! Indeed, I have summoned my people night and day

فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَآءِىْۤ اِلَّا فِرَارًا‏(6)

FALAM YAZIDHUM DO-A’AA-EE ILLAA FERAARAA.

but my summons only increases their evasion.

وَاِنِّىْ كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوْۤا اَصَابِعَهُمْ فِىْۤ اٰذَانِهِمْ وَاسْتَغْشَوْا ثِيَابَهُمْ وَاَصَرُّوْا وَاسْتَكْبَرُوا اسْتِكْبَارًا ۚ‏(7)

WA INNEE KULLAMAA DA-A’WTOHUM LE-TAGHFERA LAHUM JA-A’LOO ASAABE-A’HUM FEE AAZAANEHIM WAS TAGHSHAW SEYAABAHUM WA ASARROO WAS TAKBARUS TIKBAARAA.

Indeed whenever I have summoned them, so that You might forgive them, they would put their fingers into their ears and draw their cloaks over their heads, and they were persistent [in their unfaith], and disdainful in [their] arrogance.

ثُمَّ اِنِّىْ دَعَوْتُهُمْ جِهَارًا ۙ‏(8)

SUMMA INNEE DA-A’WTOHUM JEHAARAA.

Again I summoned them aloud,

ثُمَّ اِنِّىْۤ اَعْلَنْتُ لَهُمْ وَاَسْرَرْتُ لَهُمْ اِسْرَارًا ۙ‏(9)

SUMMA INNEE A-A’LANTO LAHUM WA ASRARTO LAHUM ISRAARAA.

and again appealed to them publicly and confided with them privately,

فَقُلْتُ اسْتَغْفِرُوْا رَبَّكُمْؕ اِنَّهٗ كَانَ غَفَّارًا ۙ‏(10)

FA-QULTUS STAGHFEROO RABBAKUM, INNAHU KAANA GHAFFAARAANY.

telling [them]: ‘‘Plead to your Lord for forgiveness. Indeed, He is all-forgiving.

يُّرْسِلِ السَّمَآءَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِّدْرَارًا ۙ‏(11)

YURSELIS SAMAA-A A’LAYKUM MIDRAARAANW.

He will send for you abundant rains from the sky,

وَّيُمْدِدْكُمْ بِاَمْوَالٍ وَّبَنِيْنَ وَيَجْعَلْ لَّكُمْ جَنّٰتٍ وَّيَجْعَلْ لَّكُمْ اَنْهٰرًا ؕ‏(12)

WA YUMDIDKUM BE-AMWAALINW WA BANEENA WA YAJ-A’L LAKUM JANNAATINW WA YAJ-A’L LAKUM ANHAARAA.

and aid you with wealth and sons, and provide you with gardens and provide you with streams.

مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَرْجُوْنَ لِلّٰهِ وَقَارًا ۚ‏(13)

MAA LAKUM LAA TARJOONA LILLAAHE WAQAARAA.

What is the matter with you that you do not look upon Allah with veneration,

وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ اَطْوَارًا‏(14)

WA QAD KHALAQAKUM ATWAARAA.

though He has created you in [various] stages?

اَلَمْ تَرَوْا كَيْفَ خَلَقَ اللّٰهُ سَبْعَ سَمٰوٰتٍ طِبَاقًا ۙ‏(15)

ALAM TARAW KAYFA KHALAQAL LAAHO SAB-A’ SAMAAWAATIN TEBAAQAA.

Have you not seen how Allah has created the seven heavens in layers,

وَّجَعَلَ الْقَمَرَ فِيْهِنَّ نُوْرًا ۙ وَّجَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًا‏(16)

WA JA-A’LAL QAMARA FEEHINNA NOORANW, WA JA-A’LASH SHAMSA SERAAJAA.

and has made therein the moon for a light and the sun for a lamp?

وَاللّٰهُ اَنْۢبَتَكُمْ مِّنَ الْاَرْضِ نَبَاتًا ۙ‏(17)

WAL LAAHO AMBATAKUM MENAL ARZE NABAATAA.

Allah made you grow from the earth, with a [vegetable] growth.

ثُمَّ يُعِيْدُكُمْ فِيْهَا وَيُخْرِجُكُمْ اِخْرَاجًا‏(18)

SUMMA YO-E’EDOKUM FEEHAA WA YUKHREJOKUM IKHRAAJAA.

Then He makes you return to it, and He will bring you forth [without fail].

وَاللّٰهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْاَرْضَ بِسَاطًا ۙ‏(19)

WAL LAAHO JA-A’LA LAKOMUL ARZA BESAATAA.

Allah has made the earth a vast expanse for you

لِّتَسْلُكُوْا مِنْهَا سُبُلًا فِجَاجًا‏(20)

LE-TASLOKOO MINHAA SOBOLAN FEJAAJAA.

so that you may travel over its spacious ways.’’ ’

قَالَ نُوْحٌ رَّبِّ اِنَّهُمْ عَصَوْنِىْ وَاتَّبَعُوْا مَنْ لَّمْ يَزِدْهُ مَالُهٗ وَوَلَدُهٗۤ اِلَّا خَسَارًا ۚ‏(21)

QAALA NOOHUR RABBE INNAHUM A’SAWNEE WAT TABA-O’O MAL LAM YAZIDHO MAALOHU WA WALADOHU ILLAA KHASAARAA.

Noah said, ‘My Lord! They have disobeyed me, following someone whose wealth and children only add to his loss,

وَمَكَرُوْا مَكْرًا كُبَّارًا ۚ‏(22)

WA MAKAROO MAKRAN KUBBAARAA.

and they have devised an outrageous plot.

وَ قَالُوْا لَا تَذَرُنَّ اٰلِهَتَكُمْ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدًّا وَّلَا سُوَاعًا ۙ وَّ لَا يَغُوْثَ وَيَعُوْقَ وَنَسْرًا ۚ‏(23)

WA QAALOO LAA TAZARUNNA AALEHATAKUM WA LAA TAZARUNNA WADDANW WA LAA SOWAA-A’NW, WA LAA YAGHOOSA WA YA-O’OQA WA NASRAA.

They say, ‘‘Do not abandon your gods. Do not abandon Wadd, nor Suwa, nor Yaghuth, Ya‘uq and Nasr,’’

وَقَدْ اَضَلُّوْا كَثِيْرًا ۚ وَلَا تَزِدِ الظّٰلِمِيْنَ اِلَّا ضَلٰلًا‏(24)

WA QAD AZALLOO KASEERAA, WA LAA TAZEDIZ ZAALEMEENA ILLAA ZALAALAA.

and already they have led many astray. Do not increase the wrongdoers in anything but error.’

مِّمَّا خَطِٓيْئٰتِهِمْ اُغْرِقُوْا فَاُدْخِلُوْا نَارًا ۙ فَلَمْ يَجِدُوْا لَهُمْ مِّنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِ اَنْصَارًا‏(25)

MIMMAA KHATEE-AATEHIM UGHREQOO FA-UDKHELOO NAARAN, FALAM YAJEDOO LAHUM MIN DOONIL LAAHE ANSAARAA.

They were drowned because of their iniquities, then made to enter a Fire, and they did not find any helpers for themselves besides Allah.

وَ قَالَ نُوْحٌ رَّبِّ لَا تَذَرْ عَلَى الْاَرْضِ مِنَ الْكٰفِرِيْنَ دَيَّارًا‏(26)

WA QAALA NOOHUR RABBE LAA TAZAR A’LAL ARZE MENAL KAAFEREENA DAYYAARAA.

And Noah said, ‘My Lord! ‘Do not leave on the earth any inhabitant from among the faithless.

اِنَّكَ اِنْ تَذَرْهُمْ يُضِلُّوْا عِبَادَكَ وَلَا يَلِدُوْۤا اِلَّا فَاجِرًا كَفَّارًا‏(27)

INNAKA IN TAZARHUM YOZILLOO E’BAADAKA WA LAA YALEDOO ILLAA FAAJERAN KAFFAARAA.

If You leave them, they will lead astray Your servants, and will beget none except vicious ingrates.

رَبِّ اغْفِرْلِىْ وَلِوَالِدَىَّ وَلِمَنْ دَخَلَ بَيْتِىَ مُؤْمِنًا وَّلِلْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ وَالْمُؤْمِنٰتِؕ وَلَا تَزِدِ الظّٰلِمِيْنَ اِلَّا تَبَارًا‏(28)

RABBIGH FIR LEE WA LE-WAALEDAYYA WA LEMAN DAKHALA BAYTEYA MOAMENANW WA LIL-MOAMENEENA WAL MOAMENAAT, WA LAA TAZEDIZ ZAALEMEENA ILLAA TABAARAA.

My Lord! Forgive me and my parents, and whoever enters my house in faith, and the faithful men and women, and do not increase the wrongdoers in anything but ruin.’
