Merits
Surah al-Qeyaamah (The Resurrection)
This Surah has 40 verses and it is ‘Makki’. It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) that the person who recites this Surah will be counted from among those who believed in the Day of Judgement and his face will be shining when he is raised from his grave. It is also narrated that frequent reciters will be raised with handsome and attractive faces on the Day of Judgement.
Recitation of this Surah increases sustenance and protects the life and possessions of the reciter. He is liked by people. Surah al-Qeyaamah also makes a person chaste, humble and sincere. Drinking water in which this Surah has been written keeps the heart safe from ailments.
Text and Translation
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful
لَاۤ اُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ الْقِيٰمَةِۙ(1)
LAA UQSEMO BE-YAWMIL QEYAAMAH.
I swear by the Day of Resurrection!
وَلَاۤ اُقْسِمُ بِالنَّفْسِ اللَّوَّامَةِؕ(2)
WA LAA UQSEMO BIN-NAFSIL LAWWAAMAH.
And I swear by the self-critical soul!
اَيَحْسَبُ الْاِنْسَانُ اَلَّنْ نَّجْمَعَ عِظَامَهٗؕ(3)
AYAHSABUL INSAANO ALLAN NAJMA-A’ E’ZAAMAH.
Does man suppose that We will not put together his bones [at resurrection]?
بَلٰى قٰدِرِيْنَ عَلٰٓى اَنْ نُّسَوِّىَ بَنَانَهٗ(4)
BALAA QAADEREENA A’LAA AN NOSAWWEYA BANAANAH.
Yes indeed, We are able to [re]shape [even] his fingertips!
بَلْ يُرِيْدُ الْاِنْسَانُ لِيَفْجُرَ اَمَامَهٗۚ(5)
BAL YOREEDUL INSAANO LE-YAFJORA AMAAMAH.
Indeed, man desires to go on living viciously.
يَسْئَلُ اَيَّانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيٰمَةِؕ(6)
YAS-ALO AYYAANA YAWMUL QEYAAMAH.
He asks, ‘When will be this “day of resurrection”?!’
فَاِذَا بَرِقَ الْبَصَرُۙ(7)
FA-EZAA BAREQAL BASAR.
But when the eyes are dazzled,
وَخَسَفَ الْقَمَرُۙ(8)
WA KHASAFAL QAMAR.
the moon is eclipsed,
وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُۙ(9)
WA JOME-A’SH SHAMSO WAL QAMAR.
and the sun and the moon are brought together,
يَقُوْلُ الْاِنْسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ اَيْنَ الْمَفَرُّ ۚ(10)
YAQOOLUL INSAANO YAWMA-EZIN AYNAL MAFAR.
that day man will say, ‘Where is the escape [from this day]?’
كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَؕ(11)
KALLAA LAA WAZAR.
No indeed! There will be no refuge!
اِلٰى رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذِ اۨلْمُسْتَقَرُّ ؕ(12)
ELAA RABBEKA YAWMA-EZENIL MUSTAQAR.
That day the [final] goal will be toward your Lord.
يُنَبَّؤُا الْاِنْسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَاَخَّرَؕ(13)
YONABBA-UL INSAANO YAWMA-EZIM BEMAA QADDAMA WA AKH-KHAR.
That day man will be informed about what [works] he had sent ahead [to the scene of judgement] and [the legacy that he had] left behind.
بَلِ الْاِنْسَانُ عَلٰى نَفْسِهٖ بَصِيْرَةٌ ۙ(14)
BALIL INSAANO A’LAA NAFSEHI BASEERAH.
Indeed, man is a witness to himself,
وَّلَوْ اَلْقٰى مَعَاذِيْرَهٗؕ(15)
WA LAW ALQAA MA-A’AZEERAH.
though he should offer excuses [to justify his failings].
لَا تُحَرِّكْ بِهٖ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهٖؕ(16)
LAA TOHARRIK BEHI LESAANAKA LE-TA’JALA BEH.
Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it.
اِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهٗ وَقُرْاٰنَهٗۚ ۖ(17)
INNA A’LAYNAA JAM-A’HU WA QUR-AANAH.
Indeed it is up to Us to put it together and to recite it.
فَاِذَا قَرَاْنٰهُ فَاتَّبِعْ قُرْاٰنَهٗۚ(18)
FA-EZAA QARAANAAHO FAT-TABE’ QUR-AANAH.
And when We have recited it, follow its recitation.
ثُمَّ اِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهٗؕ(19)
SUMMA INNA A’LAYNAA BAYAANAH.
Then, its exposition [also] lies with Us.
كَلَّا بَلْ تُحِبُّوْنَ الْعَاجِلَةَ ۙ(20)
KALLAA BAL TOHIBBOONAL A’AJELAH.
No! Indeed, you love this transitory life
وَتَذَرُوْنَ الْاٰخِرَةَ ؕ(21)
WA TAZAROONAL AAKHERAH.
and forsake the Hereafter.
وُجُوْهٌ يَّوْمَئِذٍ نَّاضِرَةٌ ۙ(22)
WOJOOHUN-Y YAWMA-EZIN NAAZERAH.
Some faces will be fresh on that day,
اِلٰى رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ ۚ(23)
ELAA RABBEHAA NAAZERAH.
looking to their Lord,
وَوُجُوْهٌ يَّوْمَئِذٍۢ بَاسِرَةٌ ۙ(24)
WA WOJOOHUN-Y YAWMA-EZIM BAASERAH.
and some faces will be scowling on that day,
تَظُنُّ اَنْ يُّفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌ ؕ(25)
TAZUNNO AN-Y YUF-A’LA BEHAA FAAQERAH.
knowing that they will be dealt out a punishment breaking the spine.
كَلَّاۤ اِذَا بَلَغَتِ التَّرَاقِىَۙ(26)
KALLAA EZAA BALAGHATIT TARAAQEE.
No indeed! When it reaches up to the collar bones
وَقِيْلَ مَنْ رَاقٍۙ(27)
WA QEELA MAN RAAQ.
and it is said, ‘Who will take him up?’
وَّظَنَّ اَنَّهُ الْفِرَاقُۙ(28)
WA ZANNA ANNAHUL FERAAQ.
and he knows that it is the [time of] parting,
وَالْتَفَّتِ السَّاقُ بِالسَّاقِۙ(29)
WAL TAFFATIS SAAQO BIS-SAAQ.
and each shank clasps the other shank,
اِلٰى رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذِ اۨلْمَسَاقُؕ(30)
ELAA RABBEKA YAWMA-EZENIL MASAAQ.
that day he shall be driven toward your Lord.
فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلّٰىۙ(31)
FALAA SADDAQA WA LAA SALLAA.
He neither confirmed [the messages of Allah], nor did he pray,
وَلٰكِنْ كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلّٰىۙ(32)
WA LAAKIN KAZZABA WA TAWALLAA.
but denied [them] and turned away,
ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ اِلٰٓى اَهْلِهٖ يَتَمَطّٰىؕ(33)
SUMMA ZAHABA ELAA AHLEHI YATAMATTAA.
and went back swaggering to his family.
اَوْلٰى لَكَ فَاَوْلٰىۙ(34)
AWLAA LAKA FA-AWLAA.
So, woe to you! Woe to you!
ثُمَّ اَوْلٰى لَكَ فَاَوْلٰىؕ(35)
SUMMA AWLAA LAKA FA-AWLAA.
Again, woe to you! Woe to you!
اَيَحْسَبُ الْاِنْسَانُ اَنْ يُّتْرَكَ سُدًىؕ(36)
AYAHSABUL INSAANO AN-Y YUTRAKA SODAA.
Does man suppose that he has been abandoned to futility?
اَلَمْ يَكُ نُطْفَةً مِّنْ مَّنِىٍّ يُّمْنٰىۙ(37)
ALAM YAKO NUTFATAM MIM MANIYYIN-Y YUMNAA.
Was he not a drop of emitted semen,
ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَقَةً فَخَلَقَ فَسَوّٰىۙ(38)
SUMMA KAANA A’LAQATAN FA-KHALAQA FA-SAWWAA.
and then a clinging mass? Whereat He created and proportioned [him],
فَجَعَلَ مِنْهُ الزَّوْجَيْنِ الذَّكَرَ وَالْاُنْثٰىؕ(39)
FA-JA-A’LA MINHUZ ZAWJAYNIZ ZAKARA WAL UNSAA.
and made of him the two sexes, male and female.
اَلَيْسَ ذٰلِكَ بِقٰدِرٍ عَلٰٓى اَنْ يُّحْىِۦَ الْمَوْتٰى(40)
ALAYSA ZAALEKA BE-QAADERIN A’LAA AN-Y YOHYAL MAWTAA.
Is not [someone like] that able to revive the dead?
