77: Al-Mursalat المرسلات

Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful

وَالْمُرْسَلٰتِ عُرْفًا ۙ‏(1)

WAL MURSALAATE U’RFAA.

By the [angelic] emissaries sent successively,

فَالْعٰصِفٰتِ عَصْفًا ۙ‏(2)

FAL-A’ASEFAATE A’SFAA.

by those who sweep along like gale,

وَّالنّٰشِرٰتِ نَشْرًا ۙ‏(3)

WAN NAASHERAATE NASHRAA.

by those who publish [the Divine messages] far and wide,

فَالْفٰرِقٰتِ فَرْقًا ۙ‏(4)

FALFAAREQAATE FARQAA.

by those who separate [the truth from falsehood] distinctly,

فَالْمُلْقِيٰتِ ذِكْرًا ۙ‏(5)

FALMULQEYAATE ZIKRAA.

by those who inspire [God’s] remembrance,

عُذْرًا اَوْ نُذْرًا ۙ‏(6)

U’ZRAN AW NUZRAA.

as exemption or warning:

اِنَّمَا تُوْعَدُوْنَ لَوَاقِعٌ ؕ‏(7)

INNAMAA TOO-A’DOONA LA-WAAQE’.

what you are promised will surely befall.

فَاِذَا النُّجُوْمُ طُمِسَتْۙ‏(8)

FA-EZAN NOJOOMO TOMESAT.

When the stars are blotted out

وَ اِذَا السَّمَآءُ فُرِجَتْۙ‏(9)

WA EZAS SAMAAA-O FOREJAT.

and the sky is cleft,

وَاِذَا الْجِبَالُ نُسِفَتْۙ‏(10)

WA EZAL JEBAALO NOSEFAT.

when the mountains are scattered [like dust]

وَاِذَا الرُّسُلُ اُقِّتَتْؕ‏(11)

WA EZAR ROSOLO UQQETAT.

and time is set for the apostles [to bear witness]

لِاَىِّ يَوْمٍ اُجِّلَتْؕ‏(12)

LE-AYYE YAWMIN UJJELAT.

—for what day has [all] that been set [to occur]?

لِيَوْمِ الْفَصْلِ‌ۚ‏(13)

LE-YAWMIL FASL.

For the Day of Judgement!

وَمَاۤ اَدْرٰٮكَ مَا يَوْمُ الْفَصْلِؕ‏(14)

WA MAA ADRAAKA MAA YAWMUL FASL.

And what will show you what is the Day of Judgement!?

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ‏(15)

WAYLUN-Y YAWMA-EZIL LIL-MOKAZZEBEEN.

Woe to the deniers on that day!

اَلَمْ نُهْلِكِ الْاَوَّلِيْنَؕ‏(16)

ALAM NOHLEKIL AWWALEEN.

Did We not destroy the former generations,

ثُمَّ نُتْبِعُهُمُ الْاٰخِرِيْنَ‏(17)

SUMMA NUTBE-O’HOMUL AAKHEREEN.

[and] then made the latter ones follow them?

كَذٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِالْمُجْرِمِيْنَ‏(18)

KAZAALEKA NAF-A’LO BIL-MUJREMEEN.

That is how We deal with the guilty.

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ‏(19)

WAYLUN-Y YAWMA-EZIL LIL-MOKAZZEBEEN.

Woe to the deniers on that day!

اَلَمْ نَخْلُقْكُّمْ مِّنْ مَّآءٍ مَّهِيْنٍۙ‏(20)

ALAM NAKHLUKKUM MIM MAAA-IM MAHEEN.

Have We not created you from a base fluid,

فَجَعَلْنٰهُ فِىْ قَرَارٍ مَّكِيْنٍۙ‏(21)

FA-JA-A’LNAAHO FEE QARAARIM MAKEEN.

[and] then lodged it in a secure abode

اِلٰى قَدَرٍ مَّعْلُوْمٍۙ‏(22)

ELAA QADARIM MA’LOOM.

until a known span [of time]?

فَقَدَرْنَاۖ فَنِعْمَ الْقٰدِرُوْنَ‏(23)

FA-QADARNAA, FA-NE’MAL QAADEROON.

Then We determined; and how excellent determiners We are!

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ‏(24)

WAYLUN-Y YAWMA-EZIL LIL-MOKAZZEBEEN.

Woe to the deniers on that day!

اَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْاَرْضَ كِفَاتًا ۙ‏(25)

ALAM NAJ-A’LIL ARZA KEFAATAA.

Have We not made the earth a receptacle

اَحْيَآءً وَّاَمْوَاتًا ۙ‏(26)

AHYAAA-ANW WA AMWAATAA.

for the living and the dead,

وَّجَعَلْنَا فِيْهَا رَوَاسِىَ شٰمِخٰتٍ وَّ اَسْقَيْنٰكُمْ مَّآءً فُرَاتًا ؕ‏(27)

WA JA-A’LNAA FEEHAA RAWAASEYA SHAAMEKHAATINW WA ASQAYNAAKUM MAAA-AN FORAATAA.

and set in it lofty [and] firm mountains, and given you agreeable water to drink?

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ‏(28)

WAYLUN-Y YAWMA-EZIL LIL-MOKAZZEBEEN.

Woe to the deniers on that day!

اِنْطَلِقُوْۤا اِلٰى مَا كُنْتُمْ بِهٖ تُكَذِّبُوْنَ‌ۚ‏(29)

INTALEQOO ELAA MAA KUNTUM BEHI TOKAZZEBOON.

[The faithless will be told:] ‘Proceed toward what you used to deny!

اِنْطَلِقُوْۤا اِلٰى ظِلٍّ ذِىْ ثَلٰثِ شُعَبٍۙ‏(30)

INTALEQOO ELAA ZILLIN ZEE SALAASE SHO-A’B.

Proceed toward the triple-forked shadow,

لَّا ظَلِيْلٍ وَّلَا يُغْنِىْ مِنَ اللَّهَبِؕ‏(31)

LAA ZALEELINW WA LAA YUGHNEE MENAL LAHAB.

neither shady nor of any avail against the flames.

اِنَّهَا تَرْمِىْ بِشَرَرٍ كَالْقَصْرِ‌ۚ‏(32)

INNAHAA TARMEE BE-SHARARIN KAL-QASR.

Indeed it throws up [giant] sparks like castles,

كَاَنَّهٗ جِمٰلَتٌ صُفْرٌ ؕ‏(33)

KA-ANNAHU JEMAALATUN SUFR.

[bright] like yellow camels.

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ‏(34)

WAYLUN-Y YAWMA-EZIL LIL-MOKAZZEBEEN.

Woe to the deniers on that day!

هٰذَا يَوْمُ لَا يَنْطِقُوْنَۙ‏(35)

HAAZAA YAWMO LAA YANTEQOON.

This is a day wherein they will not speak,

وَلَا يُؤْذَنُ لَهُمْ فَيَعْتَذِرُوْنَ‏(36)

WA LAA YOAZANO LAHUM FA-YA’TAZEROON.

nor will they be permitted to offer excuses.

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ‏(37)

WAYLUN-Y YAWMA-EZIL LIL-MOKAZZEBEEN.

Woe to the deniers on that day!

هٰذَا يَوْمُ الْفَصْلِ‌ۚ جَمَعْنٰكُمْ وَالْاَوَّلِيْنَ‏(38)

HAAZAA YAWMUL FASL, JAMA’NAAKUM WAL AWWALEEN.

‘This is the Day of Judgement. We have brought you together with the former generations.

فَاِنْ كَانَ لَكُمْ كَيْدٌ فَكِيْدُوْنِ‏(39)

FA-IN KAANA LAKUM KAYDUN FA-KEEDOON.

If you have any stratagems [left], try them out against Me!’

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ‏(40)

WAYLUN-Y YAWMA-EZIL LIL-MOKAZZEBEEN.

Woe to the deniers on that day!

اِنَّ الْمُتَّقِيْنَ فِىْ ظِلٰلٍ وَّعُيُوْنٍۙ‏(41)

INNAL MUTTAQEENA FEE ZELAALINW WA O’YOON.

Indeed the Godwary will be amid shades and springs

وَّفَوَاكِهَ مِمَّا يَشْتَهُوْنَؕ‏(42)

WA FAWAAKEHA MIMMAA YASHTAHOON.

and [enjoying] such fruits as they desire.

كُلُوْا وَاشْرَبُوْا هَنِيْٓئًا ۢ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُوْنَ‏(43)

KOLOO WASH RABOO HANEE-AM BEMAA KUNTUM TA’MALOON.

[They will be told:] ‘Enjoy your food and drink, [a reward] for what you used to do.

اِنَّا كَذٰلِكَ نَجْزِى الْمُحْسِنِيْنَ‏(44)

INNAA KAZAALEKA NAJZIL MOHSENEEN.

Thus do We reward the virtuous.’

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ‏(45)

WAYLUN-Y YAWMA-EZIL LIL-MOKAZZEBEEN.

Woe to the deniers on that day!

كُلُوْا وَتَمَتَّعُوْا قَلِيْلًا اِنَّكُمْ مُّجْرِمُوْنَ‏(46)

KOLOO WA TAMATTA-O’O QALEELAN INNAKUM MUJREMOON.

‘Eat and enjoy a little! You are indeed guilty.’

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ‏(47)

WAYLUN-Y YAWMA-EZIL LIL-MOKAZZEBEEN.

Woe to the deniers on that day!

وَاِذَا قِيْلَ لَهُمُ ارْكَعُوْا لَا يَرْكَعُوْنَ‏(48)

WA EZAA QEELA LAHOMUR KA-O’O LAA YARKA-O’ON.

When they are told, ‘Bow down [in prayer],’ they do not bow down!

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ‏(49)

WAYLUN-Y YAWMA-EZIL LIL-MOKAZZEBEEN.

Woe to the deniers on that day!

فَبِاَىِّ حَدِيْثٍۢ بَعْدَهٗ يُؤْمِنُوْنَ‏(50)

FABE-AYYE HADEESIM BA’DAHU YOAMENOON.

So what discourse will they believe after this?
