Merits

Breaking the fast with dates: This act doubles the reward of the prayer to four hundred folds.

Allahumma laka sumto: One who says this supplicatory prayer will be awarded, by Almighty Allah, the rewards of all those who observe fasting on that day.

Allahumma Rabban Nur al-Azim: This supplicatory prayer also brings about a great merit.

Forgiveness at the first bite: Forgiveness of Almighty Allah is the reward of those who say this imploration. A Hadees reads: Almighty Allah releases from Hellfire one million persons at the last hour of every day in Ramazan; therefore, pray Him to include you with these released ones.

Feeding fasters: Concerning this, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) is reported to have said, “Verily, anyone who offers food for a faster in Ramazan will have the same reward that is decided for the faster without having any amount of his reward reduced and will have the same reward of acting good deeds according to the power of that food.”

‘Allamah al-Hilli, in al-Risalah al-Sa’diyyah, has narrated that Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) said, “As for any believer who feeds another believer with a single bite of food in Ramazan, Almighty Allah will decide for him the reward of manumitting thirty believing slaves and will decide to respond to his prayers.”

Dua for forty years of forgiveness: Sayyid ibn Tawus has mentioned that if one says a supplicatory prayer each night in Ramazan, his sins of forty years will be forgiven.

Text and Translation

Breaking the Fast

It is recommended to postpone breaking one’s fast later than the Isha’ Prayer unless one is too weak to keep fasting or one is being waited by people to break the fasting altogether, in an invitation for example.

Begin breaking the fast with food that is utterly lawful, especially dates.

It is also advisable to break the fast with dates, ripe dates, candy, sugar-candy, and cool water.

Recite the familiar iftar duas, such as:

اَللّٰهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلٰى رِزْقِكَ اَفْطَرْتُ وَعَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْتُ

ALLAAHUMMA LAKA SUMTO WA A’LAA RIZQEKA AFTARTO, WA A’LAYKA TAWAKKALTO.

O Allah, for the sake of You have I fasted, with Your sustenance have I broken my fast, and in You have I trusted.

Sayyid ibn Tawus and al-Kaf’ami narrate this dua, which begins:

اَللّٰهُمَّ رَبَّ النُّوْرِ الْعَظِيْمِ...

ALLAAHUMMA RABBAN NOORIL A’ZEEM…

O Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Light...

Imam Ali (a.s.) used to say this when he broke his fast:

بِسْمِ اللهِ اَللّٰهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْنَا وَعَلٰى رِزْقِكَ اَفْطَرْنَا فَتَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ السَّمِيْعُ الْعَلِيْمُ.

BISMIL LAAHE ALLAAHUMMA LAKA SUMNAA WA A’LAA RIZQEKA AFTARNAA FATAQABBAL MINNAA INNAKA ANTAS SAMEE-U’L A’LEEM.

In the Name of Allah. O Allah, for You have we fasted and with Your sustenance have we broken our fasting; so, (please) accept form us. You are surely the All-hearing, the All-knower.

At the first bite of the food with which you break the fast, say:

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ، يَا وَاسِعَ الْمَغْفِرَةِ اِغْفِرْ لِيْ.

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM. YAA WAASE-A’L MAGHFERATE IGHFIR LEE.

In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. O Liberal in forgiving! (Please do) forgive me.

Recite [Surah al-Qadr](A101) when breaking the fast.

Give alms at the time of breaking the fast, and offer food to other fasters, even a single date and a drink of water.

Qadr & Dukhan Each Night

Recite [Surah al-Qadr](A101) 1,000 times each night.

When possible, recite [Surah al-Dukhan](A48) 100 times each night.
