Namaz of Imam al-Husayn (a.s.)

Text and Translation

Upon concluding the prayer, say the following supplication:

اَللّٰهُمَّ اَنْتَ الَّذِيْ اسْتَجَبْتَ لِاٰدَمَ وَحَوَّاءَ اِذْ قَالَا

ALLAAHUMMA ANTAL LADHEES TAJABTA LI-AADAMA WA HAWWAA'A IDH QAALAA

O Allah, it is You who responded to Adam and Eve when they both said,

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا اَنْفُسَنَا

RABBANAA ZALAMNAA ANFUSANAA

“Our Lord! We have been unjust to ourselves,

وَاِنْ لَمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا

WA IN LAM TAGHFIR LANAA WA TARHAMNAA

and if You forgive us not and have not mercy on us,

لَنَكُوْنَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِيْنَ

LANAKOONANNA MINAL KHAASIREEN

we shall certainly be of the losers.”

وَنَادَاكَ نُوْحٌ فَاسْتَجَبْتَ لَهٗ

WA NAADAAKA NOOHUN FASTAJABTA LAHOO

And when Noah cried to You, You answered him

وَنَجَّيْتَهٗ وَاَهْلَهٗ مِنَ الكَرْبِ الْعَظِيْمِ

WA NAJJAYTAHOO WA AHLAHOO MINAL KARBIL A'ZEEM

and delivered him and his family from the great calamity.

وَاَطْفَاْتَ نَارَ نُمْرُوْدَ عَنْ خَلِيْلِكَ اِبْرَاهِيْمَ

WA ATFA'TA NAARA NUMROODA A'N KHALEELIKA IBRAAHEEM

And it is You who extinguished the fire of Nimrod for Your intimate friend Abraham

فَجَعَلْتَهَا بَرْداً وَسَلاماً

FAJA'ALTAHAA BARDAN WA SALAAMAA

and thus changed it into coldness and peace.

وَاَنْتَ الَّذِيْ اسْتَجَبْتَ لِاَيُّوْبَ اِذْ نَادٰى

WA ANTAL LADHEES TAJABTA LI-AYYOOBA IDH NAADAA

And it is You Who responded to Job when he cried to You, saying,

اِنِّيْ مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَاَنْتَ اَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ

INNEE MASSANIYAD DURRU WA ANTA ARHAMUR RAAHIMEEN

“Harm has afflicted me, and You are the most Merciful of all those who show mercy.”

فَكَشَفْتَ مَا بِهٖ مِنْ ضُرٍّ

FAKASHAFTA MAA BIHEE MIN DURR

Therefore, You took off what harm he had,

وَآتَيْتَهٗ اَهْلَهٗ وَمِثْلَهُمْ مَعَهُمْ

WA AATAYTAHOO AHLAHOO WA MITHLAHUM MA'AHUM

and You gave him his family and the like of them with them:

رَحْمَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ وَذِكْرٰى لِاُوْلِيْ الْاَلْبَابِ

RAHMATAN MIN I'NDIKA WA DHIKRAA LI-ULIL ALBAAB

a mercy from You and a reminder to the owners of sound intellects.

وَاَنْتَ الَّذِيْ اسْتَجَبْتَ لِذِيْ النُّوْنِ

WA ANTAL LADHEES TAJABTA LIDHIN NOON

And it is You Who responded to Dhu'l-Nun (i.e. Prophet Jonah)

حِيْنَ نَادَاكَ فِيْ الظّلُمَاتِ

HEENA NAADAAKA FIZ ZULUMAAT

when he cried through the depths of darkness,

اَنْ لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ

AN LAA ILAAHA ILLAA ANTA SUBHAANAKA

“There is no god but You. Glory be to You.

اِنِّيْ كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِيْنَ

INNEE KUNTU MINAZ ZAALIMEEN

I was indeed of those who are wrong!”

فَنَجَّيْتَهٗ مِنَ الغَمِّ

FANAJJAYTAHOO MINAL GHAMM

So, You delivered him from distress.

وَاَنْتَ الَّذِيْ اسْتَجَبْتَ لِمُوْسٰى وَهَارُوْنَ دَعْوَتَهُمَا

WA ANTAL LADHEES TAJABTA LIMOOSAA WA HAAROONA DA'WATAHUMAA

And it is You Who responded to the prayer of Moses and Aaron

حِيْنَ قُلْتَ قَدْ اُجِيْبَتْ دَعْوَتُكُمَا فَاسْتَقِيْمَا

HEENA QULTA QAD UJEEBAT DA'WATUKUMAA FASTAQEEMAA

when You said, “Accepted is your prayer! So, stand you straight.”

وَاَغْرَقْتَ فِرعَوْنَ وَقَوْمَهٗ

WA AGHRAQTA FIR'AWNA WA QAWMAH

You thus drowned Pharaoh and his people.

وَغَفَرْتَ لِدَاوُوْدَ ذَنْبَهٗ

WA GHAFARTA LIDAAWOODA DHANBAH

You forgave the sin of David

وَتُبْتَ عَلَيْهِ رَحْمَةً مِنْكَ وَذِكْرٰى

WA TUBTA A'LAYHI RAHMATAN MINKA WA DHIKRAA

and accepted his repentance out of Your mercy and as a reminder.

وَفَدَيْتَ اِسْمَاعِيْلَ بِذِبْحٍ عَظِيْمٍ

WA FADAYTA ISMAA'EELA BIDHIBHIN A'ZEEM

You ransomed Ishmael with a momentous sacrifice

بَعْدَ مَا اَسْلَمَ وَتَلَّهٗ لِلْجَبِيْنِ

BA'DA MAA ASLAMA WA TALLAHOO LIL JABEEN

after he had submitted his will and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead for sacrifice.

فَنَادَيْتَهٗ بِالْفَرَجِ وَالرَّوْحِ

FANAADAYTAHOO BIL FARAJI WAR RAWH

Hence, You called him with relief and comfort.

وَاَنْتَ الَّذِيْ نَادَاكَ زَكَرِيَّا نِدَاءً خَفِيّاً

WA ANTAL LADHEE NAADAAKA ZAKARIYYAA NIDAA'AN KHAFIYYAA

And it is You to Whom Zachariah cried in secret,

فَقَالَ رَبِّ اِنِّيْ وَهَنَ الْعَظْمُ مِنِّيْ

FAQAALA RABBI INNEE WAHANAL A'ZMU MINNEE

praying, “O my Lord! Infirm indeed are my bones,

وَاشْتَعَلَ الرَّاْسُ شَيْباً

WASH TA'ALAR RA'SU SHAYBAA

and the hair of my head has glistened with grey,

وَلَمْ اَكُنْ بِدُعَائِكَ رَبِّ شَقِيّاً

WA LAM AKUN BIDU'AA'IKA RABBI SHAQIYYAA

but never am I unblest, O my Lord, in my prayer to You.”

وَقُلْتَ يَدْعُوْنَنَا رَغَباً وَرَهَباً

WA QULTA YAD'OONANAA RAGHABAN WA RAHABAA

And You said, “They used to call on Us with love and reverence

وَكَانُوْا لَنَا خَاشِعِيْنَ

WA KAANOO LANAA KHAASHI'EEN

and they humbled themselves before Us.”

وَاَنْتَ الَّذِيْ اسْتَجَبْتَ لِلَّذِيْنَ آمَنُوْا وَعَمِلُوْا الصَّالِحَاتِ

WA ANTAL LADHEES TAJABTA LILLADHEENA AAMANOO WA A'MILUS SAALIHAAT

And it is You Who responded to those who had believed and done good deeds

لِتَزِيْدَهُمْ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ

LITAZEEDAHUM MIN FADLIK

so as to increase Your favor upon them.

فَلَا تَجْعَلْنِيْ مِنْ اَهْوَنِ الدَّاعِيْنَ لَكَ وَالرَّاغِبِيْنَ اِلَيْكَ

FALAA TAJ'ALNEE MIN AHWANID DAA'EENA LAKA WAR RAAGHIBEENA ILAYK

So, (please) do not consider me the most debased suppliant and desirous to You.

وَاسْتَجِبْ لِيْ كَمَا اسْتَجَبْتَ لَهُمْ

WASTAJIB LEE KAMAS TAJABTA LAHUM

And respond to me in the same way as You responded to them,

بِحَقِّهِمْ عَلَيْكَ

BIHAQQIHIM A'LAYK

(I beseech to You) by their right (that is incumbent) on You.

فَطَهِّرْنِيْ بِتَطْهِيْـرِكَ

FATAHHIRNEE BITATHEERIK

Purify me with Your purification,

وَتَقَبَّلْ صَلَاتِيْ وَدُعَائِيْ بِقَبُوْلٍ حَسَنٍ

WA TAQABBAL SALAATEE WA DU'AA'EE BIQABOOLIN HASAN

accept my prayer and supplication in the best manner,

وَطَيِّبْ بَقِيَّةَ حَيَاتِيْ

WA TAYYIB BAQIYYATA HAYAATEE

make the rest of my life good,

وَطَيِّبْ وَفَاتِيْ

WA TAYYIB WAFAATEE

make my demise good,

وَاخْلُفْنِيْ فِيْمَنْ اَخْلُفُ

WAKHLUFNEE FEEMAN AKHLUF

be the supervisor of my inheritors,

وَاحْفَظْنِيْ يَا رَبِّ بِدُعَائِيْ

WAHFAZNEE YAA RABBI BIDU'AA'EE

safeguard me, O my Lord, through my supplication,

وَاجْعَلْ ذُرِّيَّتِيْ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً

WAJ'AL DHURRIYYATEE DHURRIYYATAN TAYYIBAH

and make my offspring goodly

تَحُوْطُهَا بِحِيَاطَتِكَ

TAHOOTUHAA BIHIYAATATIK

by encompassing them

بِكُلِّ مَا حُطْتَ بِهٖ ذُرِّيَّةَ اَحَدٍ مِنْ اَوْلِيَائِكَ وَاَهْلِ طَاعَتِكَ

BIKULLI MAA HUTTA BIHEE DHURRIYYATA AHADIN MIN AWLIYAA'IKA WA AHLI TAA'ATIK

with the same things with which You have encompassed the offspring of Your intimate saints and the people who obeyed You appropriately,

بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ

BIRAHMATIKA YAA ARHAMAR RAAHIMEEN

out of Your mercy, O most merciful of all those who show mercy.

يَا مَنْ هُوَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ رَقِيْبٌ

YAA MAN HUWA A'LAA KULLI SHAY'IN RAQEEB

O You Who observes all things,

وَلِكُلِّ دَاعٍ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ مُجِيْبٌ

WA LIKULLI DAA'IN MIN KHALQIKA MUJEEB

Who answers all those who supplicate to You amongst Your creatures,

وَمِنْ كُلِّ سَائِلٍ قَرِيْبٌ

WA MIN KULLI SAA'ILIN QAREEB

and Who is close to all those who implore You!

اَسْاَلُكَ يَا لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ

AS'ALUKA YAA LAA ILAAHA ILLAA ANT

I thus implore You, O He save Whom there is no god,

الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّوْمُ

AL-HAYYUL QAYYOOM

O He Who is Ever-living, Self-Subsisting,

الْاَحَدُ الصَّمَدُ

AL-AHADUS SAMAD

One and Only, Absolute,

الَّذِيْ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُوْلَدْ

ALLADHEE LAM YALID WA LAM YOOLAD

You beget not nor are You begotten

وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهٗ كُفُواً اَحَدٌ

WA LAM YAKUN LAHOO KUFUWAN AHAD

and there is none like unto You.

وَبِكُلِّ اسْمٍ رَفَعْتَ بِهٖ سَمَاءَكَ

WA BIKULLIS MIN RAFA'TA BIHEE SAMAA'AK

And I implore You by all Names with which You raised Your heavens,

وَفَرَشْتَ بِهٖ اَرْضَكَ

WA FARASHTA BIHEE ARDAK

spread out Your earth,

وَاَرْسَيْتَ بِهِ الْجِبَالَ

WA ARSAYTA BIHIL JIBAAL

firmly fixed the mountains,

وَاَجْرَيْتَ بِهِ الْمَاءَ

WA AJRAYTA BIHIL MAA'

made water flow,

وَسَخَّرْتَ بِهِ السَّحَابَ

WA SAKHKHARTA BIHIS SAHAAB

made the clouds subservient,

وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ وَالنُّجُوْمَ

WASH SHAMSA WAL QAMARA WAN NUJOOM

as well as the sun, the moon, the stars,

وَاللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ

WAL LAYLA WAN NAHAAR

the night, and the daylight,

وَخَلَقْتَ الْخَلائِقَ كُلَّهَا

WA KHALAQTAL KHALAA'IQA KULLAHAA

and created all beings.

اَسْاَلُكَ بِعَظَمَةِ وَجْهِكَ الْعَظِيْمِ

AS'ALUKA BI-A'ZAMATI WAJHIKAL A'ZEEM

I implore You by the magnitude of Your Magnificent Face

الَّذِيْ اَشْرَقَتْ لَهُ السَّمَاوَاتُ وَالْاَرْضُ

ALLADHEE ASHRAQAT LAHUS SAMAAWAATU WAL ARD

to which the heavens and the earth shone

فَاَضَاءَتْ بِهِ الظُّلُمَاتُ

FA-ADAA'AT BIHIZ ZULUMAAT

causing darkness to change into lights,

اِلَّا صَلَّيْتَ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

ILLAA SALLAYTA A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALI MUHAMMAD

(I implore You by all these) to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

وَكَفَيْتَنِيْ اَمْرَ مَعَاشِيْ وَمَعَادِيْ

WA KAFAYTANEE AMRA MA'AASHEE WA MA'AADEE

save me from the troubles of my living and my other life,

وَاَصْلَحْتَ لِيْ شَاْنِيْ كُلَّهٗ

WA ASLAHTA LEE SHA'NEE KULLAH

amend all my affairs,

وَلَمْ تَكِلْنِيْ اِلٰى نَفْسِيْ طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ

WA LAM TAKILNEE ILAA NAFSEE TARFATA A'YN

not to cause me to depend upon myself for even a winking of an eye,

وَاَصْلَحْتَ اَمْرِيْ وَاَمْرَ عِيَالِيْ

WA ASLAHTA AMREE WA AMRA I'YAALEE

manage the affairs of my household and me,

وَكَفَيْتَنِيْ هَمَّهُمْ

WA KAFAYTANEE HAMMAHUM

save me from their concerns,

وَاَغْنَيْتَنِيْ وَاِيَّاهُمْ مِنْ كَنْزِكَ وَخَزَائِنِكَ

WA AGHNAYTANEE WA IYYAAHUM MIN KANZIKA WA KHAZAA'INIK

make them and me rich out of Your treasure, hoards,

وَسَعَةِ فَضْلِكَ الَّذِيْ لَا يَنْفَدُ اَبَداً

WA SA'ATI FADLIKAL LADHEE LAA YANFADU ABADAA

and Your expansive grace that never runs out,

وَاَثْبِتْ فِيْ قَلْبِيْ يَنَابِيْعَ الْحِكْمَةِ

WA ATHBIT FEE QALBEE YANAABEE'AL HIKMAH

fix in my heart founts of sagacity

الَّتِيْ تَنْفَعُنِيْ بِهَا

ALLATEE TANFA'UNEE BIHAA

from which I may benefit

وَتَنْفَعُ بِهَا مَنِ ارْتَضَيْتَ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ

WA TANFA'U BIHAA MANIR TADAYTA MIN I'BAADIK

and from which You may benefit Your servants with whom You are pleased,

وَاجْعَلْ لِيْ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِيْنَ

WAJ'AL LEE MINAL MUTTAQEEN

and make me, from among the pious,

فِيْ آخِرِ الزَّمَانِ اِمَاماً

FEE AAKHIRIZ ZAMAANI IMAAMAA

a leader (imam) in the last of times,

كَمَا جَعَلْتَ اِبْرَاهِيْمَ الْخَلِيْلَ اِمَاماً

KAMAA JA'ALTA IBRAAHEEMAL KHALEELA IMAAMAA

in the same way as You made Abraham Your intimate friend to be a leader.

فَاِنَّ بِتَوْفِيْقِكَ يَفُوْزُ الْفَائِزُوْنَ

FA-INNA BITAWFEEQIKA YAFOOZUL FAA'IZOON

Verily, only through Your guidance do the winners achieve prosperity,

وَيَتُوْبُ التَّائِبُوْنَ

WA YATOOBUT TAA'IBOON

the repentant declare repentance,

وَيَعْبُدُكَ الْعَابِدُوْنَ

WA YA'BUDUKAL A'ABIDOON

and the true worshippers worship You.

وَبِتَسْدِيْدِكَ يَصْلُحُ الصَّالِحُوْنَ

WA BITASDEEDIKA YASLUHUS SAALIHOON

And only through Your supervision do the righteous,

الْمُحْسِنُوْنَ الْمُخْبِتُوْنَ

AL-MUHSINOONAL MUKHBITOON

the good-doers, those who humble themselves before You,

الْعَابِدُوْنَ لَكَ الْخَائِفُوْنَ مِنْكَ

AL-A'ABIDOONA LAKAL KHAA'IFOONA MINK

those who worship You sincerely, and those who fear You become righteous.

وَبِاِرْشَادِكَ نَجَا النَّاجُوْنَ مِنْ نَارِكَ

WA BI-IRSHAADIKA NAJAN NAAJOONA MIN NAARIK

And only through Your direction will those who will be delivered from Your Hellfire be saved

وَاَشْفَقَ مِنْهَا الْمُشْفِقُوْنَ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ

WA ASHFAQA MINHAL MUSHFIQOONA MIN KHALQIK

and those who fear You, from amongst Your creatures, stand in awe of it.

وَبِخِذْلَانِكَ خَسِرَ الْمُبْطِلُوْنَ

WA BIKHIDHLAANIKA KHASIRAL MUBTILOON

But through Your disappointing them will the wrong lose,

وَهَلَكَ الظَّالِمُوْنَ

WA HALAKAZ ZAALIMOON

the unjust perish,

وَغَفَلَ الْغَافِلُوْنَ

WA GHAFALAL GHAAFILOON

and those distracted from You be inattentive.

اَللّٰهُمَّ آتِ نَفْسِيْ تَقْوَاهَا

ALLAAHUMMA AATI NAFSEE TAQWAAHAA

O Allah, grant my soul its piety

فَاَنْتَ وَلِيُّهَا وَمَوْلَاهَا

FA-ANTA WALIYYUHAA WA MAWLAAHAA

for You are its guardian and master

وَاَنْتَ خَيْرُ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا

WA ANTA KHAYRU MAN ZAKKAAHAA

and You are the best to purify it.

اَللّٰهُمَّ بَيِّنْ لَهَا هُدَاهَا

ALLAAHUMMA BAYYIN LAHAA HUDAAHAA

O Allah, show it its true guidance,

وَاَلْهِمْهَا تَقْوَاهَا

WA ALHIMHAA TAQWAAHAA

inspire it with what is good for it,

وَبَشِّرْهَا بِرَحْمَتِكَ حِيْنَ تَتَوَفَّاهَا

WA BASHSHIRHAA BIRAHMATIKA HEENA TATAWAFFAAHAA

carry to it the good news of Your mercy when You grasp it,

وَنَزِّلْهَا مِنَ الْجِنَانِ عُلْيَاهَا

WA NAZZILHAA MINAL JINAANI U'LYAAHAA

lodge it in the highest positions of the gardens of Paradise,

وَطَيِّبْ وَفَاتَهَا وَمَحْيَاهَا

WA TAYYIB WAFAATAHAA WA MAHYAAHAA

make good its death and life,

وَاَكْرِمْ مُنْقَلَبَهَا وَمَثْوَاهَا

WA AKRIM MUNQALABAHAA WA MATHWAAHAA

and honor its place and abode

وَمُسْتَقَرَّهَا وَمَاْوَاهَا

WA MUSTAQARRAHAA WA MA'WAAHAA

and its dwelling and house,

فَاَنْتَ وَلِيُّهَا وَمَوْلَاهَا

FA-ANTA WALIYYUHAA WA MAWLAAHAA

for You are its guardian and master.
