Ziyarat Arbaeen - The 20th of Safar

Text and Translation

Visit Imam al-Husayn (a.s.) on the Arbaeen Day, advisably in the early forenoon, and say:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰی وَلِیِّ اللّٰهِ وَحَبِیْبِہٖ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA WALIYYIL LAAHE WA HABEEBEHI

Peace be upon the Representative of Allah and His beloved;

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰی خَلِیْلِ اللّٰهِ وَنَجِیْبِہٖ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA KHALEELIL LAAHE WA NAJEEBEHI

peace be upon the Intimate Friend of Allah and His distinguished one;

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰی صَفِیِّ اللّٰهِ وَابْنِ صَفِیِّہٖ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA SAFIYYIL LAAHE WABNE SAFIYYEHI

peace be upon the Chosen One of Allah and the son of His chosen one.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَی الْحُسَیْنِ الْمَظْلُوْمِ الشَّھِیْدِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAL HUSAYNIL MAZLOOMISH SHAHEEDE

Peace be upon Husain, the oppressed, the martyr.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰی اَسِیْرِ الْكُرُبَاتِ وَقَتِیْلِ الْعَبَرَاتِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA ASEERIL KOROBAATE WA QATEELIL A’BARAATE

Peace be upon the prisoner of sorrows and the one slain for whose sake tears are shed.

اَللّٰھُمَّ اِنِّیْٓ اَشْھَدُ اَنَّہٗ وَلِیُّكَ وَابْنُ وَلِیِّكَ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE ASH-HADO ANNAHU WALIYYOKA WABNO WALIYYEKA

O Allah, I bear witness that he is Your Representative and the son of Your Representative,

وَصَفِیُّكَ وَابْنُ صَفِیِّكَ الْفَآئِزُ بِكَرَامَتِكَ

WA SAFIYYOKA WABNO SAFIYYEKAL FAAA-EZO BE-KARAAMATEKA

Your chosen one and the son of Your chosen one, the winner of Your honor.

اَکْرَمْتَہٗ بِالشَّھَادَۃِ وَحَبَوْتَہٗ بِالسَّعَادَۃِ

AKRAMTAHU BISH SHAHAADATE WA HABAWTAHU BIS SA-A’ADATE

You honored him with martyrdom, gifted him with happiness,

وَاجْتَبَیْتَہٗ بِطِیْبِ الْوِلاَدَۃِ وَجَعَلْتَہٗ سَیِّدًا مِّنَ السَّادَۃِ

WAJ TABAYTAHU BE-TEEBIL WELAADATE WA JA-A’LTAHU SAYYEDAN MENAS SAADATE

distinguished him with a pure birth, and made him a master among masters,

وَقَآئِدًا مِّنَ الْقَادَۃِ وَذَائِدًا مِّنَ الذَّادَۃِ

WA QAAA-EDAN MENAL QAADATE WA ZAAA-EDAN MINAZ ZAADATE

a leader among leaders, and a defender among defenders.

وَاَعْطَیْتَہٗ مَوَارِیْثَ الْاَنْبِیْآءِ وَجَعَلْتَہٗ حُجَّۃً عَلٰی خَلْقِكَ مِنَ الْاَوْصِیَآءِ

WA AA’-TAYTAHU MAWAAREESAL AMBEYAAA-E WA JA-A’LTAHU HUJJATAN A’LAA KHALQEKA MENAL AWSEYAAA-E

You granted him the inheritances of the Prophets and made him a Proof over Your creation from among the Successors.

فَاعْذَرَ فِیْ الدُّعَآءِ وَمَنَحَ النُّصْحَ وَبَذَلَ مُھْجَتَہٗ فِیْكَ

FA-AA’-ZARA FID DO-AAA-E WA MANAHAN NUSHA WA BAZALA MOHJATAHU FEEKA

So he removed all excuses in his calling (towards You), provided sincere advice, and sacrificed his lifeblood for Your sake

لِیَسْتَنْقِذَ عِبَادَكَ مِنَ الْجَھَالَۃِ وَحَیْرَۃِ الضَّلاَ لَۃِ

LE-YASTANQEZA E’BAADEKA MENAL JAHAALATE WA HAYRATIZ ZALAALATE

to rescue Your servants from ignorance and the bewilderment of misguidance.

وَقَدْ تَوَازَرَ عَلَیْهِ مَنْ غَرَّتْهُ الدُّنْیَا

WA QAD TAWAAZARA A’LAYHE MAN GHARRAT-HUD DUNYAA

Indeed, those whom the world had deceived leagued together against him;

وَبَاعَ حَظَّہٗ بِالْاَرْذَلِ الْاَدْنٰی

WA BAA-A’ HAZZAHU BIL-ARZALIL ADNAA

they sold their share for the meanest price

وَشَرٰی اٰخِرَتَہٗ بِالثَّمَنِ الْاَوْكَسِ وَتَغْطَرَسَ

WA SHARAA AAKHERATAHU BIS-SAMANIL AWKASE WA TA-GHAT-RASA

and traded their Hereafter for the lowest value. They acted arrogantly,

وَتَرَدّٰی فِیْ ھَوَاهُ وَاَسْخَطَكَ وَاَسْخَطَ نَبِیِّكَ

WA TARADDAA FEE HAWAAHO WA ASKHATAKA WA ASKHATA NABIYYAKA

perished in their desires, provoked Your anger and the anger of Your Prophet,

وَاَطَاعَ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ اَھْلَ الشِّقَاقِ وَالنِّفَاقِ

WA ATAA-A’ MIN E’BAADEKA AHLASH SHEQAAQE WAN NEFAAQE

and obeyed from among Your servants the people of discord and hypocrisy—

وَحَمَلَۃَ الْاَوْزَارِ الْمُسْتَوْجِبِیْنَ النَّارَ فَجَاھَدَھُمْ فِیْكَ

WA HAMALATAL AWZAARIL MUSTAWJEBEENAN NAARA FA-JAAHADAHUM FEEKA

those who carry the burden of sins and deserve the Fire. So he fought them for Your sake,

صَابِرًا مُّحْتَسِبًا حَتّٰی سُفِكَ فِیْ طَاعَتِكَ دَمُہٗ

SAABERAN MOHTASEBAN HATTAA SOFEKA FEE TAA-A’TEKA DAMOHU

patient and seeking reward, until his blood was spilled in obedience to You

وَاسْتُبِیْحَ حَرِیْمُہٗ

WASTOBEEHA HAREEMOHU

and his sanctity was violated.

اَللّٰهُمَّ فَالْعَنْهُمْ لَعْنًا وَبِیْلًا وَّعَذِّبْهُمْ عَذَابًا اَلِیْمًا

ALLAAHUMMA FAL-A’NHUM LA’-NAN WABEELAN WA A’ZZIBHUM A’ZAABAN ALEEMAN

O Allah, curse them with a heavy curse and punish them with a painful punishment.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَابْنَ رَسُوْلِ اللّٰهِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA RASOOLIL LAAHE

Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of Allah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَابْنَ سَیِّدِ الْاَوْصِیَآءِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA SAYYEDIL AWSEYAAA-E

Peace be upon you, O son of the Chief of the Successors.

اَشْهَدُ اَنَّكَ اَمِیْنُ اللّٰهِ وَابْنُ اَمِیْنِہٖ

ASH-HADO ANNAKA AMEENUL LAAHE WABNO AMEENEHI

I bear witness that you are the trustee of Allah and the son of His trustee;

عِشْتَ سَعِیْدًا وَمَضَیْتَ حَمِیْدًا

I’SHTA SA-E’EDAN WA MAZAYTA HAMEEDAN

you lived happily, passed away praised,

وَمُتَّ فَقِیْدًا مَظْلُوْمًا شَهِیْدًا

WA MUTTA FAQEEDAN MAZLOOMAN SHAHEEDAN

and died missed, oppressed, and as a martyr.

وَاَشْهَدُ اَنَّ اللّٰهَ مُنْجِزٌ مَّا وَعَدَكَ وَمُہْلِكٌ مَّنْ خَذَلَكَ

WA ASH-HADO ANNAL LAAHA MUNJEZUM MAA WA-A’DAKA WA MOHLEKUM MAN KHAZALAKA

I bear witness that Allah will fulfill what He promised you, destroy those who abandoned you,

وَمُعَذِّبٌ مَّنْ قَتَلَكَ وَاَشْهَدُ اَنَّكَ وَفَیْتَ بِعَہْدِ اللّٰهِ

WA MO-A’ZZEBUN MAN QATALAKA WA ASH-HADO ANNAKA WAFAYTA BE-A’HDIL LAAHE

and punish those who killed you. I bear witness that you fulfilled the covenant of Allah

وَجَاهَدْتَ فِیْ سَبِیْلِہٖ حَتّٰی اَتٰیكَ الْیَقِیْنُ

WA JAAHADTA FEE SABEELEHI HATTAA ATAAKAL YAQEENO

and struggled in His way until certainty (death) came to you.

فَلَعَنَ اللّٰهُ مَنْ قَتَلَكَ وَلَعَنَ اللّٰهُ مَنْ ظَلَمَكَ

FA-LA-A’NAL LAAHO MAN QATALAKA WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO MAN ZALAMAKA

So may Allah curse those who killed you, may Allah curse those who oppressed you,

وَلَعَنَ اللّٰهُ اُمَّۃً سَمِعَتْ بِذٰلِكَ فَرَضِیَتْ بِہٖ

WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN SAME-A’T BE-ZAALEKA FARAZEYAT BEHI

and may Allah curse the nation that heard of that and was pleased with it.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّیْ اُشْهِدُكَ اَنِّیْ وَلِیٌّ لِّمَنْ وَالَاهُ وَعَدُوٌّ لِّمَنْ عَادَاهُ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE USH-HEDOKA ANNEE WALIYYUN LEMAN WAALAAHO WA A’DUWWUN LEMAN A’ADAAHO

O Allah, I call You to witness that I am a friend to those who befriend him and an enemy to those who are his enemies.

بِاَبِیْ اَنْتَ وَاُمِّیْ یَابْنَ رَسُوْلِ اللّٰهِ

BE-ABEE ANTA WA UMMEE YABNA RASOOLIL LAAHE

May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O son of the Messenger of Allah.

اَشْهَدُ اَنَّكَ كُنْتَ نُوْرًا فِیْ الْاَصْلَابِ الشَّامِخَۃِ

ASH-HADO ANNAKA KUNTA NOORAN FIL ASLAABISH SHAAMEKHATE

I bear witness that you were a light in the sublime loins

وَالْاَرْحَامِ الْمُطَهَرَۃِ

WAL ARHAAMIL MOTAHHARATE

and purified wombs;

لَمْ تُنَجِّسْكَ الْجَاهِلِیَّۃُ بِاَنْجَاسِهَا

LAM TONAJJISKAL JAAHELIYYATO BE-ANJAASEHAA

the Age of Ignorance did not defile you with its impurities,

وَلَمْ تُلْبِسْكَ الْمُدْلَهِمَّاتُ مِنْ ثِیَابِهَا

WA LAM TULBISKAL MUDLAHIMMAATO MIN SEYAABEHAA

nor did it clothe you in its dark garments.

وَاَشْهَدُ اَنَّكَ مِنْ دَعَآئِمِ الدِّیْنِ وَاَرْكَانِ الْمُسْلِمِیْنَ

WA ASH-HADO ANNAKA MIN DA-A’AA-EMID DEENE WA ARKAANIL MUSLEMEENA

I bear witness that you are among the pillars of the religion, the supports of the Muslims,

وَمَعْقِلِ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ وَاَشْهَدُ اَنَّكَ الْاِمَامُ الْبَرُّ التَّقِیُّ الرَّضِیُّ الزَّكِیُّ

WA MA’-QELIL MO-MENEENA WA ASH-HADO ANNAKAL EMAAMUL BARRUT TAQQIYYUR RAZIYYUZ ZAKIYYUL

and the refuge of the believers. I bear witness that you are the Imam who is righteous, God-fearing, pleased, pure,

الْهَادِیْ الْمَہْدِیُّ وَاَشْهَدُ اَنَّ الْاَئِمَّۃَ مِنْ وُلْدِكَ

HAADIL MAHDIYYO WA ASH-HADO ANNAL A-IMMATA MIN WULDEKA

the guide, and the rightly-guided. I bear witness that the Imams from your progeny

كَلِمَۃُ التَّقْوٰی وَاَعْلاَمُ الْهُدٰی وَالْعُرْوَۃُ الْوُثْقٰی

KALEMATUT TAQWAA WA AA’-LAAMUL HODAA WAL U’RWATUL WUSQAA

are the word of piety, the signs of guidance, the firmest handle,

وَالْحُجَّۃُ عَلٰی اَہْلِ الدُّنْیَا وَاَشْهَدُ اَنِّیْ بِكُمْ مُؤْمِنٌ

WAL HUJJATO A’LAA AHLID DUNYAA WA ASH-HADO ANNEE BEKUM MO-MENUNW

and the Proof over the people of the world. I bear witness that I am a believer in you all

وَّبِاِیَابِكُمْ مُوْقِنٌۢ بِشَرَایِعِ دِیْنِیْ وَخَوَاتِیْمِ عَمَلِیْ

WA BE-EYAABEKUM MOOQENUN BE-SHARAA-YE-E’ DEENEE WA KHAWAATEEME A’MALEE

and certain of your return, based on the laws of my religion and the seals of my deeds.

وَقَلْبِیْ لِقَلْبِكُمْ سِلْمٌ وَّاَمْرِیْ لِأَمْرِكُمْ مُتَّبِعٌ

WA QALBEE LE-QALBEKUM SILMUN WA AMREE LE-AMREKUM MUTTABE-U’N

My heart is at peace with your hearts, my affairs follow your commands,

وَّنُصْرَتِیْ لَكُمْ مُعَدَّۃٌ

WA NUSRATEE LAKUM MO-A’DDATUN

and my support is prepared for you

حَتّٰی یَاْذَنَ اللّٰهُ لَكُمْ

HATTAA YAAZANAL LAAHO LAKUM

until Allah gives you permission.

فَمَعَكُمْ مَعَكُمْ لاَ مَعَ عَدُوِّكُمْ صَلَوَاتُ اللّٰهِ عَلَیْكُمْ

FA-MA-A’KUM MA-A’KUM LAA MA-A’ A’DDUWWEKUM SALAWAATUL LAAHE A’LAYKUM

So I am with you, with you—not with your enemies. The blessings of Allah be upon you,

وَعَلٰی اَرْوَاحِكُمْ وَاَجْسَادِكُمْ وَشَاهِدِكُمْ وَغَآئِبِكُمْ

WA A’LAA ARWAAHEKUM WA AJSAADEKUM WA SHAAHEDEKUM WA GHAAA-EBEKUM

upon your souls, upon your bodies, upon those of you who are present and those who are absent,

وَظَاهِرِكُمْ وَبَاطِنِكُمْ اٰمِیْنَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِیْنَ.

WA ZAAHEREKUM WA BAATENEKUM AAMEENA RABBAL A’ALAAMEENA.

upon your manifest and your hidden. Amen, O Lord of the Worlds.
